buleetu 0 Posted May 30, 2011 hi all just wondering what strobe i need for a d70 with an ike housing,,there is a connection that goes to the hotshoe on the inside of the housing with a socket on the outside what do i need eg arms and cables to fire the flash thanks
ChrigelKarrer 52 Posted May 30, 2011 Well, if your Ikelite Housing have a built-in TTL controller, best will be to get a Ikelite DS-125/160/+61/200 strobe and the cable to connect the bulkhead (socket outside) to the strobe. If your D70 strobe should fire while in the housing you may connect a optical triggered slave strobe. This kind of strobes are relatively inexpensive and the most advanced provide a working "but still pseudo" TTL. If the internal strobe of your D70 should not fire as the flash will not pop up enough you need a electrically connected strobe like the Ikelite DS series, or taking pictures in manual mode using a Nikonos type cable who basically only triggers the strobe to flash in the right moment. Yes, you will need one strobe arm to connect each strobe to the camera housing. Basically: 1° longer arms give you more distance to position the strobe and that comes hand especially at WA photos 2° 3 joints and 2 arm segments gives you also more distance and positions, this comes handy always 3° flex arms are cheap, but squeak while moving and limit the position of the strobe due their "rigid" kind Chris
buleetu 0 Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) thanks chris i look into the strobes u mention and also the different ways to mount them,,, im not sure weather to buy a wide angle lens or a strobe first though,,,i already have a 60 mm lens for macro and i get some great shots with that and i think a strobe would help a lot,,,ill see which one i have the money for first,,the lenses i was looking at a quiet expensive so perhaps a 2nd hand one will do thanks again ill get back to u if i get astrobe for some advice im sure do i have to go with ikelight strobes because i have the ike housing or can i get any type of strobe Edited May 31, 2011 by buleetu
ChrigelKarrer 52 Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) do i have to go with ikelight strobes because i have the ike housing or can i get any type of strobe You don't need a Ikelite strobe, but it makes life more easy! Using a non Ikelite strobe you need a adapter cable and TTL will work only with a external controller and this are first expensive and second can create problems with unreliable firing of the strobe. Ikelite DSLR housings have a built-in TTL controller and using a Ikelite strobe they provide reliable results especially on macro shots. If TTL is necessary is a hen or egg question and it's up to you to deceide if you need TTL or regulate the exposure completely in manual. Your Ikelite housing probably won't allow the internal strobe to pop open completely and so the Nikon strobe will not fire if not fully open, but to be sure try that with the camera in your Ikelite housing. If the strobe will not fire inside the housing, this situation won't allow you to use optical triggered slave strobes like the INON S2000/D2000/Z240 or some of the Sea & Sea strobes just to name a few. buleetu 0 Posted June 1, 2011 yes chris ur right,,the camera flash doesnt open inside the housing,,it half opens but not enough to let the flash fire
buleetu 0 Posted June 3, 2011 could i use a nikonos strobe
ChrigelKarrer 52 Posted June 4, 2011 (edited) A strobe for the Nikonos camera or a strobe with a Nikonos cable/bulkhead? Yes you can use a strobe with Nikonos cable/bulkhead, but only manual exposure and you need the right cable going from Ikelite bulkhead on the housing to the Nikonos bulkhead on the strobe. If you are talking of a old Nikonos strobe for the Nikonos camera then i don't know exactly if the will work, but they are old strobes and probably not worth to buy. http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/compare_sb.html Chris Edited June 4, 2011 by ChrigelKarrer
john70490 3 Posted June 4, 2011 If you're on a limited budget, I would suggest you look for a used DS50 with a serial number higher than 70000. With sync cable #4103.51, you will then have TTL with your housing. The strobe doesn't cover as wide an angle as the DS125 but is almost as powerful and is much more compact and lighter in weight. It works fine for macro with the 60mm lens and you should be able to get one for about $200.

john70490 3 Posted June 4, 2011 (edited) so why should the serial be higher than 70000,,is that just its age perhaps Because older DS50 strobes, with lower serial numbers, are not TTL-compatible with Ikelite housings. But if your housing does not have TTL, that is not relevant. Edited June 4, 2011 by john70490
