  1. 1. Which would you choose as a small camcorder for both underwater and land use?

Go for the Canon - it will give you more options with housings and optics.

Mark, it's slomo 1080p/60 vs higher res 1080p/25. Plus the wider FOV and Sony Lanc (which has issues with housings that have yet to be resolved yet).

Once again Sony have made some strange decisions in "upgrading" CX550 to CX700, a couple of which make things difficult for the housing manufacturers.

The Canon seems like the better choice for now.

Thanks

Now it is just a case of getting hold of the Canon. It is out of stock everywhere and looks like it will be for some time.

Wow,

I just posted a different thread asking to have my hand held as I considered the CX560. It would appear that this is a poor choice: Peter and Drew allude to camera housing problems.

Thanks for the warning.

Aquatica will soon release a new housing for the Sony CX560/700.

Not a poor choice - as long as a manufacturer can make a housing that works with it.

The problem is with the video-out feed for an external monitor (apparently can't display the camera data) and the LANC signal to trigger a MWB (apparently can't use the "my menu" function as a short-cut to the MWB feature). Housings that don't have their own monitor and have press-button access to the camcorders own LCD monitor should work - although some people find these arrangements to be a bit awkward.

Peter

Gates will have a housing out soon as well for the CX700 / 560. We also are shipping housings for the XA10 / HF-G10. Whichever you choose, we have you covered.

Aquatica and Gates designs are usually quite different from L&M's. I personally like the latter better. So for me, Sony's move is bad news... I had bought my housing hoping to be able to upgrade my camcorder every other year. That doesn't look likely anymore.

i just got a canon hf g10 last week. are gates and l&m the only choices still for these. i had been looking pretty hard at the L&M but its pretty pricey and the cost for the upgraded screen being 1k seems a bit ridiculous. But the fathom 90 lens that you can use with the L&M housing seems pretty good. For the gates it seems Lens choice is limited. How does the gp32a port on the gates compare to the fathom 90 from L&M? I am under the impression it is not as good a lens. i cant find any video to compare the two either.

L&M - worth it for the easy controls and that superb Fathom 90 lens.

I went back to the L&M website and saw that the Fathom 90 lens is compatible with the latest G10 and XA10 camcorders. Are we talking about the same Fathom 90 lens I bought a year ago for my CX550V? That's good news. For some reason I was remembering that this lens had been designed for the Sony camcorder... At last, a possible path to a camcorder upgrade! That is, if Canon does change everything to their camcorder design (to copy Sony?)...

Yes, they are both using Fathom 90 with Model no. 802-0259.

Great! I'd be curious to see some example footage at depth and in wide-angle scenarios (where the lights are of little use and MWB has to rely on the quality of the sensor only). I could only find one example of this setup in use (

) but it's all close-ups under bright lights, so not too illustrative of this aspect.

There is a L&M official sample here.

Thanks! Lots of macro shots, but the wide-angle ones seem to have decent color. They probably wouldn't show their crappy shots anyhow...

Here is some shots of the HF G10 in low light, dark water type diving, with no artificial lights. http://vimeo.com/27745098

if you look at some of our other videos, the newest one of the Olympic II, we did not use the wide angle lens during those shots.

Please take into mind that our water here in So Cal is pretty green the majority of the time.

I did not notice that there was anything to "penetrate" in the Olympic :B): (referring to the reel action)! Not such a bad viz though...

This being said, I need to go back and check it out. It's been 2 years and I was shooting a Bonica Action and using iMovie 9! (

)

(And the water was green too even though I cheated when editing)
