Bali Dive Ops

Recommended Posts

I will be staying in Pemuteran for a few days at the Amertha Bali Villa. Looking for a recommendation for a good dive ops, especially for photogs.

I especially have heard good things about secret bay, so that's on the list. Any other sites I should focus on?

Appreciate any tips.

Thanks,

John

Most people usually engage operators from the south (Kuta/Seminyak/Sanur) and those ops arrange transport to Pemuteran and other areas. The dive ops up there tend to be either extensions of those ops or the locals who take the odd customer who doesn't come with the bigger operators. I can't tell you what the quality of the local Pemuteran operators are or the quality of their equipment although I have filled my tanks there a couple of times.

Pemuteran has been the "hub" of diving in the north, because it's "central" to Menjangan, Gilimanuk (Secret Bay et al) and Seririt (Puri Jati et al) which are the more popular sites along the northern coast. The accommodations around the area is more concentrated and generally nicer than the other areas. I've stayed at the Amertha a couple of times and it's nice. I'd check the moon phases for the time of year for macro sites as that tends to dictate what life is there. There are a couple of new sites in Gilimanuk, including the Mandarin/Dragonet site.

I've used Bali International Dive Professionals for most of my local Bali diving the last 12 years. They will be able to tell you the more insider sites that have been found in the last few years. I'm sure others mention their fave ops as well.

I use bali diving academy there, its located right on the beach, run by a swiss guy named renaud, good guy and he gives plenty of flexibilty for photogs and take you any of those places with your own guide. I think they are actually associated with amerta? Not sure, I believe the resort whose grounds they are located on is called Taman Sari.. But, its a small beach, they are on the left as you look out at the water

Yes that's right. The Taman Sari group owns both the Taman Sari and Amertha and the BDA is located in Taman Sari. That's where I filled my tanks.

Hi Drew,

I may be in danger of being too far off topic, but please expand on moon phase and time of year for macro subjects.

I dived with Searovers located within AdiAssri resort. I mailed Paul the british owner beforehand and he managed to get me his most experienced guide named Made who I shared with another dutch photog.

Secret Bay was quite good, I had the chance to dive in 20m vizibility conditions, I thought I was in lakewater... get a thick wetsuit too temperature of 23° during 70-80 minutes, is something you need cold protection for.

Oh well, you'd be quite lucky to find a Pemuteran dive operator willing to dive Puri Jati. I didn't find any last month, it seems the place is too much of a "hit or miss", they prefer to concentrate on local, Menjangan or Gilimanuk dives.
