glamourpuss 3 Posted September 6, 2011 Help! I was packing up my camera gear and noticed that one of the port locks on my Ikelite housing is broken. I still have the two lock system not the four, so this is a bit of a problem. We leave tomorrow for the red sea and I can't find anyone in London with a replacement part. Considering gluing the broken port lock in the closed position as I can still take both my macro port and my 8" dome port off and on with only one lock functioning. Is this a terrible idea? What type of glue would work that I could get very last minute from a hardware store in London? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
blibecap 29 Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) How is your port lock broken? Is the little black part broken or does it no longer attach to the clear part of the housing? I don't think that there is a glue that will stick to the black part and I also wouldn't recommend that as a fix. If it won't attach to the housing then you are out of luck because the housing is made from polycarbonate and nothing will stick to that. My advice in either case is get it fixed before you take it diving or you will be buying a new camera, lens and housing. I don't think this will be a photo trip. Don in Colorado 2 Posted September 6, 2011 Perhaps Ikelite has a supplier in the Red Sea area.
Ferg42 13 Posted September 6, 2011 Maybe see if you can 'borrow' one from someone else's housing- they're very easy to unfasten and refasten. I'd offer you mine from a housing I'm not using much at the moment if I had a way of getting it to you in time. There must be someone around who could help, either in London, or wherever you're going in the Red Sea. Good luck.
Otara 0 Posted September 6, 2011 (edited) The idea isnt entirely suicidal, but there are obvious risks. Some people used to use electrical/gaffa tape as extra protection with Ikelite port locks to hold the port on, if you do try glue, Id suggest that as an extra. Deep6 7 Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) ikelite has always gone to bat for me. Assuming that the lock can be replaced, have them air mail it to your destination. Bob Edited September 7, 2011 by Deep6
DuikKees 1 Posted September 7, 2011 (edited) From what port in Egypt is your liveaboard leaving? I am also heading for a liveaboard tomorrow. I am leaving from Port Ghalib in Marsa Alam. I am happy to lent you an Ikelite portlock from my old housing if we can arrange to meet somewhere. I am in Port Ghalib thursday night around 23.00h (I guess). Greetings, Kees Edited September 7, 2011 by DuikKees
glamourpuss 3 Posted September 15, 2011 Thanks so much for all the support, especially those of you offering to help me out at the last minute. I managed to get a port lock from a friend just outside of London. He came to my rescue bringing me one of his port locks the night before we left, and I ordered him some new ones from Camera's Underwater in Devon who delivered them a couple of days after I left. In the end it all worked out but was a bit of a stressful day. I'll post some pics from the trip later this week! DuikKees - We actually did leave from Port Ghalib as well, what boat were you on? Thanks for the offer, nice to be part of such a great community! Hope you had a great trip.

DuikKees 1 Posted September 19, 2011 Glad to hear everything went well. I was on the MY Obsession, we had a fun week with the diveclub. We went for some hammerhead-action, but they stayed a bit too far in the deep. I guess the water was a bit too warm for them. Greetz, Kees
glamourpuss 3 Posted September 20, 2011 Cool... think I saw your boat once or twice. I was on the Blue Pearl. We saw a couple of Hammerheads at Eliphinstone, but ya they were deep, and I pretty much missed them all. Others in the group saw 4 or 5... I barely caught a glimpse of one. Bummer, but still a good trip! Finally finished editing photos and once again was reminded how lucky I am to have someone come to my rescue!
JackConnick 76 Posted September 20, 2011 Glad for friends! I would highly recommend you return the housing and have the four lock upgrade done. The two lock system just isn't very reliable. Jack
