Canon EOS 1DX

Recommended Posts

So Canon finally announced the EOS 1DX, with 12fps and ISO204800 capability on a 18mp full frame sensor... and oh... Intra-frame video called "All-I" FHD. There's still a lot of TBA but the field test models are out so I think they just announced it to beat Nikon's announcement later in the month.

I think there's going to be a role reversal of sorts. Nikon will go high megapixel cameras and Canon is already marketing that "there's more to an image than resolution!" to push lowlight performance.... hmmm 2007 all over again but the other way round?

I like the fact that the 1DX video mode now has time code on it,it should help us videographers out alot.Canon does seem to have finally tuned it's video capability on this one, with time code, exposure and audio control also very good low light ability. Many of my colleagues around the world shooting news or production, have traded in their EX1's and P2's for 7D's or 5D2's coupled with a matte box, good sound kit and legs.

And that's why Canon got out of the megapixel war... their core market of PJ, sport shooters and filmmakers make more money than studio shooters who want high resolution. I'll miss APS-H though. It was nice to have 2 cameras with different sensors working in one housing.

I was just thinking how I'd be happy with 18-21mp at 14fps for a DSLR. And now maybe I'll actually fill my 64GB cards. A good thing my GO-Pros get all the SDXC cards. Still 120fps is nicer though! This will probably kill Scarlet, which is a pity but I think Epic-S will still survive.

I like the specs. 18MP always seemed a sweet spot being approximately a DPS @ 300dpi. Not being too greedy on resolution allows the great frame rates and ISO performance too.

Oh did I mention I wish the EU wouldn't ruin it for the ROW! Why tax a camera if it can go pass 30minutes recording? Where do those Brussels spout these rules from? Well at least it's 29 mins 59 seconds now... a lot better than 12!

Another thing is it doesn't look like it's a good fit for 1D4 housings without some serious mods.

Sweet specs indeed, if it was smaller I would seriously think a switch to Canon...

I though MP fixed all high ISO noise issues. ^_^

Strange that they should give up on the additional reach of the 1D crop, a loss for sport photos, and would expect even higher frame rate.

Sounds like the D4 is going to have similar specs with 18MP

Jeff, the science is still valid. However I think it's about throughput of the system, in spite of having dual DIGIC 5. Trying to get 12fps at 32mp... especially at ISO50000 is not going to be cheap. Since they haven't announced how many frames it can continue at 12 fps, I'm assuming that it's an ongoing process. They've seeded some prototypes for certain photogs to play with at F1 and tennis events.

I just find it funny that Canon is going with Nikon designation of x. I wish they'd follow the local Japanese market names for cars... so much more fun.

Q. What do you shoot?

A. A Canon GodRay II. You?

Q. Nikon Skyline.

Yeah from the dimensions some serious mod required. A few more holes and shifting of the saddle. May still be possible as overall shape and some controls are exactly the same. Will only know when the camera is out and if I could borrow one.

The first few hundred will be given to pros and CPS types, which is normal since the Olympics are next year.

Got my hands on the 1DX today - briefly. CPS have some at the GDT Festival in Germany. Very nice - although hard to tell the difference from the LCD screen!

Yeah it's a drag they aren't allowing people to take some samples. Will have to hit London in Nov @ the O2 for tennis and hit up a few of the tennis guys to give up the camera for 5 minutes!

I really hope that whichever housing manufacturer will (re)design a housing for the 1DX, that they will include enough space for an HDMI cable and an external HDMI monitor. I am anxious to upgrade my 1DIV as soon as this happens.

I doubt that will happen for the aluminum housing manufacturers. HDMI heads are quite long., so the additional space needed would be the housing will have to be maybe even 15mm wider. I suppose it'll depend on what the demand is. Maybe Aquatica will now care a bit more about video with the acquisition of Amphibico. They are still the only one with a hydrophone for stills housings.

Here's Dan Chung's interview with more info on HDMI:

Canon went high megapixel to fill a yawning gap for resolution for the studio shooters when digital capture "exploded"... but that market is now being chipped-away by the medium format digitals as they become more of a mature and affordable offering. As they develop further I can see them regaining their place in pro photography, and the DSLRs being of less interest to the studio/fashion/portrait guys.. the ones I know anyway.

What do you think the specs of the X portend for the next iteration of the 5D? Will it just be an upgrade—new processors, higher ISO, improved video controls and features, maybe a few more MP?—or will they redefine its niche the way they've apparently redefined the 1D series?

This really looks like an amazing 'machine'. Hard to see how the D4 can up this camera when it arrives

Well with the woes in Thailand affecting many manufacturers, it may just be that Nikon "skunk" works are heavily delayed as well. Assuming there's no Olympus style books cooking, it'll be interesting to see if smaller companies like Pentax will survive as Sony's cameras roll on.

Here's the white paper for the Metering system.
