Rainer 3 Posted October 26, 2011 I have an Aquatica housing (D7000) arriving shortly. I plan to insure the camera, lens, lights, and housing. Just curious how much people are insuring their housings for. Assuming the housing did leak/flood, what kind of financial drain would I be looking at just for the housing? I'd rather not over-insure it against flood (renter's insurance would cover theft). Many thanks.

If you are a DAN member - highly recommended (I had a big DCS hit in August so I really know more than I want to know about their benefits) - they offer a good equipment insurance program - I would recommend insuring your equipment for retail cost because whatever you would collect (minus the deductible) in the event of a total loss may be what you are spending for a housing for the next model of camera and housing if you happen to flood after your D7000 camera has been replaced by the D8000 or whatever. Good luck. Andy Edited October 26, 2011 by DrFiscus
Rainer 3 Posted October 26, 2011 I am a DAN member and have various other gear insured through them (scooters, can lights, etc). In those cases, I don't insure for full value, but simply for the cost that would be incurred by flooding (e.g. replacing electronics and batteries). This covers for potential actual losses without overpaying for insurance. Really just curious how much it would cost to fix a flooded (in particular Aquatica D7000) housing. The body, lens, and lights will be insured for replacement (i.e. full) value. Thanks!

I think the deductible on the DAN insurance is something like $250 or 10% of the value of the housing so you may be not that much over the deductible for a rebuild. However- if the camera floods some point in the future after Nikon is 2 models ahead of your D7000 you may be repairing an obsolete housing unless you can find an out of stock D7000 on Ebay or elsewhere. Something to consider. Andy
Rainer 3 Posted October 26, 2011 I have to renew my insurance every year with DAN. I can see increasing the housing amount in the future if a flood meant having to replace with a different body. For now, though, I'm pretty well tied to the D7000. I'll e-mail Backscatter as you suggest and see what they think. Thanks! diverrex 0 Posted October 27, 2011 I insure my scuba and photo gear with State Farm. I insure at cost because I'm not just insuring against floods but also theft or other loss.
DrMark 0 Posted October 27, 2011 I insure my scuba and photo gear with State Farm. I insure at cost because I'm not just insuring against floods but also theft or other loss. I insure my scuba and photo gear with State Farm too. They offer an "all risks floater" policy for my homeowners insurance (which I think is really ironically named given what we are all worried about ). When I found out how little it costs to insure for full replacement cost, it was pretty much a no-brainer to get it. Since it is an all-risk policy, it covers everything from theft to airline baggage handling to flooding. I think it explicitly excludes nuclear war though... --Mark
eyu 27 Posted October 27, 2011 I have State Farm "any peril" insurance for my camera gear, dive computers and MacBook Pro computers. I have had DAN in the past, but switched to the State Farm insurance because it covers any loss, there is no deductible and costs less. DAN does not cover you equipment loss from it falling overboard, it will cover your loss if you have a police report. The only drawback with the State Farm policy is that it does not cover professional photographers. By definition, you are a professional if you sell or have your photos up for sale.
