Drew 0 Posted November 3, 2011 Sitting here in Paramount, at the Canon presentation for the EOS C(Cinema) 300. 5 lenses so far... compatible with DSLR as well. 30-300! Go to engadget for pics. My playbook is acting up and I have to leave soon to catch the Red event. LA traffic!

Drew 0 Posted November 3, 2011 Looks like a good camera to house. Boxy and modular... Handle removable. I can see possiblities. HDMI out to an external monitor. A bit boring @ 1080p but that's why I driving to Red's event

Drew 0 Posted November 3, 2011 Sorry, BB is a bit zonky... Think everyone here is jamming up ATT and Verizon bandwidth. Lowlight looks fantastic on La Foret's short. All links are dead or dying due toi traffic. Bumped into Vince. His blog will have the short in about an hour. Hmm got an email from John E (gates) that his housing is somewhere here on display. Running out of time. Gotta go beat traffic to eat then Red studios.
Drew 0 Posted November 3, 2011 Off to Red studios by 5 for their announcement. So nice of them to make it all in Hollywood and within 10 blocks of each other. So many tech pundits here, I don't know why I'm posting!
Drew 0 Posted November 3, 2011 Guys check engadget and vincelaforet for updates. I'm going to eat then go to red (4 blks from paramount! You think someone arranged this for the people attending?).
SimonSpear 65 Posted November 3, 2011 http://www.dvinfo.net/article/acquisition/...pl-cameras.html They had this posted virtually as soon as the presentation started! A bit of a let down to be honest. How can this be a 'Historic Global Announcement'? Very strange hype from Canon over this...

CheungyDiver 53 Posted November 4, 2011 Canon C300 Cinema, new PL lenses - Great short film by Vincent LaForet Scarlet X - anyone ordered one ? Canon EOS 4K concept DSLR just announced. My head is spinning.... Interesting times indeed. David
jonny shaw 16 Posted November 4, 2011 Canon looks ok, but 1080p and not even higher frame rates, that 30-300 lens look bloody awesome though. Scarlet, looks great I am still in two minds whether to pick up a 2nd hand red one mx or a Scarlet, I need a camera for a show in Feb.....
Nick Hope 151 Posted November 4, 2011 This appears to be utterly blown away by Scarlet in every category, not least (for me) in the fact there is no autofocus or momentary autofocus. Really surprised they haven't managed more than 30p at 1080p. Not even Canon's worldwide service network is that much of an advantage, since you can just buy 2 Scarlets for the same money and have one as a spare. Drew 0 Posted November 4, 2011 Nick, when you add it all up, the running cost of Scarlet is probably going to be a bit higher with SSD drives etc. The package with AL mount is 14k. The Canon will be 15k street. Then it's a matter of other things like run time etc. AF is not a concern for cinematic guys, which is the market the C300 is aimed at. Also ever tried editing R3D on a laptop? C300 is a mobile solution. Then of course, you have the 4k concept camera which will probably turn up in 2013 in the same body as the 1Dx maybe. Reds aren't nearly as reliable as a F35 or Alexa.
Nick Hope 151 Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) Yeah, and I read on Howard Hall's blog that his Red One actually melted in Lembeh. I understand that AF is unnecessary for topside cinematic guys, but the ability to do at least a momentary AF is a big bonus for underwater wildlife shooting where one doesn't always have the luxury of time. I think it's lack will rule the C300 out for many people for that purpose. I'm not really in the market for either of these cameras anyway. I'm more of a 7D mkII kind of guy, if one ever comes out. Weatherproof, a bit less challenging (I assume) in terms of DOF due to the cropped sensor, gazillions of res/fps choices, and hopefully an articulated screen for topside use. The concept 4K DSLRs look interesting though. Edited November 4, 2011 by Nick Hope
Drew 0 Posted November 4, 2011 Nick, the S35 is about the same size as the APS-C...just a tiny bit larger.
Nick Hope 151 Posted November 4, 2011 In other words, similar DOF with like-for-like lenses/settings/FOV between a Scarlet and a 7D, and both more DOF than a 5D mkII or C300?
Drew 0 Posted November 4, 2011 Both the C300 and Scarlet/Epic have S35 sensors.
Nick Hope 151 Posted November 4, 2011 Ah OK, thanks. I should read the blummin specs. I had been assuming this was more like a 5D mkII in a video camera form factor. Now I'm wondering what the C300 has to justify the extra price over the Sony FS100, other than higher bitrate for onboard capture.
Drew 0 Posted November 4, 2011 Here is the page with the shorts that were screened @ Paramount. Big screen is much better! http://www.canoncinemaeos.com/media-gallery.php

jonny shaw 16 Posted November 5, 2011 I saw a comment from Vincent saying that the C300 is better than Alexa? What is he on, obviously the Canon payroll
Drew 0 Posted November 5, 2011 I'm not sure where you read that comment but based on his gushings about the camera at the show, I'd assume he's talking about ISO noise. I saw ISO16k in one of those films on a 60ft screen... it wasn't clean but it's very nice. The noise is very filmic and not like the chroma noise of some other cameras. The Alexa is very nice, but the C300 really does well with noise. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the new low noise camera for this year. I can't say if it's better definitively, but it sure looks nice and is up there with the big boys. PS: Vince is undeniably a Canon man, but I don't think he's nuts on this one. His story lines on his shorts however, need work! Sorry Vince!
jonny shaw 16 Posted November 5, 2011 Maybe, also the quote was probably about 10th hand via some dodgy blog so I'm sure it wasn't word for word. Hell of a lot smaller than and cheaper than Alexa though, the noise does look good on it though.

Drew 0 Posted November 6, 2011 Wow, apparently it's got a lot of broadcast people very excited. I mean it's broadcast approved straight out of the box. And that iphone/ipad app is SO COOL! Not that wifi will work well in an Aluminum housing but in a polycarbonate, it could be useful.
