johnjvv 11 Posted November 12, 2011 Hello, We are finally ready to move to Australia and leaving for Melbourne in January. We would like to join a fun dive club which will be friendly towards photography. Can anyone recommend good a good club, we'll be living somewhere between Molrnington and Melbourne. Thanks, John
Cal 5 Posted November 12, 2011 Hey I'm a former Melburnian! Its a great city with some amazing diving. Try to contact SWAMP - seapics@alphalink.com.au There an underwater photo club. Not sure if there still running. Otherwise try to contact JimSwims on this forum as he's an active underwater photographer who knows a huge amount about the best sites, local clubs, diving conditions etc Cheers! JimSwims 31 Posted November 13, 2011 Hi John, welcome to one of the most liveable cities in the world. I'd be happy to help with local advice, the temperate diving we have here is unique and world class. As for dive clubs there are quite a few, the most photo friendly would perhaps be Get Under dive club of which I and a number of other photographers are members of. Feel free to contact me about any details that I may be able to assist with. Cheers, Jim.
johnjvv 11 Posted November 13, 2011 Hey Cal, Jim... Thanks very much for your responses. Jim I had a look at the Get Under Dive Club website and it looks exactly like the type of club we are looking for, it does not seem as commercial as some of the other clubs we found on the web and it will be great to meet locals that know diving in Melbourne. We are so excited about getting there! We wont be far from Mornington as Kari's (my partner) parents live in Frankston whom we will be staying with until we are settled. It would be nice to catch up when we get there sometime in January. Thanks again and look forward to meeting you. Cheers, John

In that case we will be very close by as I'm in Frankston myself Independent dive clubs are definitely the go as there is no commercial agenda and everyone chips in to help. Also a day out on the boat diving is a fraction of the cost and a much more relaxed affair. There are also a number of university dive clubs but some of them can be be very disorganized and due to their nature have a weaker knowledge/experience base. There is also a BSAC club or two here if further training is a requirement for either yourself or your partner. Looking forward to catching up. Cheers, Jim. johnjvv 11 Posted November 14, 2011 Jim, Sounds good....we will have to learn to dive with dry suits for winter. I did 13 degree water in South Africa once, I had a 5mm on and thought I was going to die!!! Anyhow...we will look you up when we get there and looking forward to it!!!
