londonsean69 1 Posted December 10, 2011 Why killing the lionfish ? They are not native to the area and as such have no natural predators. Just google 'Cozumel Lionfish hunt'
saudio 6 Posted December 10, 2011 They are not native to the area and as such have no natural predators. Just google 'Cozumel Lionfish hunt' Correct. The Cozumel divemasters have been given permission to destroy the fish even within the marine sanctuary. They are feeding them to other predators such as snappers, groupers, eels, and nurse sharks in the hopes that they will start taking live lionfish and naturally controlling the population. There is also some commercial fishing for Lionfish now. They are delicious eating and are served in some Cozumel restaurants.
