Oceanshutter 121 Posted March 1, 2012 For those that have recently flown with Silk air from Singapore to Manado. Do they weigh the carry on bags? We like to try to carry on the all the photo equipment. I see that you get an extra 10 kg if you have scuba gear for checked baggage. For a total of 32 kgs of checked luggage. Oceanshutter 121 Posted March 1, 2012 This thread should answer your questions http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=45170 Thanks for your response. I read that thread before I posted this. It didn't completely answer my question. I saw no mention specifically of Silk Air and carry on's. One person says, that they haven't noticed carry on's being weighed for Internal Indo Flights....Well, singapore to manado is not internal. That is international. Unless I am missing something in that post..... Plus for the checked baggage, I am flying Delta into Singapore, and then Silk air to Manado. So I don't think I can check my baggage all the way thru to Manado. Dustin
LembehHelen 0 Posted March 1, 2012 Hello, I working in Lembeh and very few of our guests seem to get their hand luggage weighed by Silk Air so you should be OK. Helen
expatdiver 0 Posted March 1, 2012 I just did the SIN-MDC-SIN on Silk Air a few weeks ago with a Pelican and Lowe Pro backpack as my carry-ons. No one even paid attention to my bags. 10+ years of flying Silk Air/Singapore I don't think I've ever had my carry-ons weighed or sized.
Oceanshutter 121 Posted May 2, 2012 To update after my flight with Silk Air. Going from SIN to MDC. After the baggage scan going into the gate, the Silk Air lady, asked to weigh my luggage. I about had a heart attack, as my carry on was about 40-45 pounds. It was a couple of housings/with cameras in them. With ULCS arms and clamps for both and tripod and legs, charges, focus light, etc........All stuffed in the Akona camera bag. The poor lady tried to pick it up and couldn't. After talking to the manager there at the gate, and opening it up and showing him what it was. He agreed to let me carry it on, but I had to lift it into the overhead bin. No problem...I sure wasn't going to let one of the flight attendants lift it up there for me. Coming back home, there wasn't any issue. In fact, they didn't even charge me for the extra weight for my checked baggage. Which was about 60 pounds overweight, even after silk airs extra 10 kg rule for SIN to MDC allowance. Steve Douglas 16 Posted May 9, 2012 Silk Air used to have a special page showing extra weight allowances for divers. I recall pulling out a few years ago when being questioned by the attendant and showing it to her. She then let us proceed as our carry ons were very heavy as well. Do they still have that page on their website. It might be worth looking for. Steve

No mention of extra for carry ons. Dustin

PIG004 0 Posted September 13, 2012 I just flew them SIN-BPN with one bag weighting 25lbs with my D300 in it and a 2nd bag weighting about 18lbs with my laptop. The girl asked me why 2 bags and I said one was a camera and the other a laptop, she said good idea not to check those in!

howeikwok 27 Posted September 17, 2012 Been flying to manado once or twice a year since 2004. Had my hand carry stopped twice. Always at the departure lounge which meant Singapore Changi Airport ground staff. First time, a pretty rude lady insisted i couldn't bring 2 hand carry luggage through and insisted i check in one. I was carrying a cabin bag with my housings and a lowepro computrekker plus for the cameras. Just so happen i was on the same flight as photographer William Tan who helped me call the Silkair manager in Manado to speak to this lady but she was insistent that the flight was full and those were the instructions of the cabin crew. No go! In the end i happened to meet another friend who was on the same flight without any hand carry and i just asked him to help me carry it on the flight. When i boarded i found the flight at most 2/3 full. Second time i was at the departure lounge and the staff told me that my cabin bag was too big! After insisting that i've been using this bag without problem for years, i was allowed to carry it on. I guess it depends on luck and usually they don't bother caucasians so not to worry. I think the silkair crew don't really bother about hand carry as there are many local indonesian business people on the manado flight and they don't really have much in the way of hand carry luggage.
