A few from Similan Islands

Recommended Posts

Just spent 4 days in the Similan Islands. Unbelievably bad timing as the princess of Thailand decided to go diving in Surin and Richelieu so most of the area was closed. I felt very sad to see the effects of both Tsunami and coral bleaching there as much of the hard coral above 12-15m was dead. Below that was lovely but mostly requiring nitrox!

A few favourites, hope you enjoy. All taken with D7000, Nauticam housing, Inon strobes

As usual, wonderful shots. Thanks for sharing. I think the first one of the wire coral gobies has set a new bar for wire coral goby shots.

That is amazing pictures, Alex. I was at the Similans just a month ago, but mostly took pictures of the effects of bleaching. And quit diving after a couple of days, due to just that. I was there 12 years ago, and had missed out on the scale of the bleaching, so it was kind of depressing revisiting the sites again. That said, fantastic that you were able to get these shots. I am very impressed.

Cheers Bent

Yes, the coral bleaching was very sad to see, it was as though the life had all move down 10 meters. It was really a nitrox diving scenario for UW photography. A couple of the deeper sites were still very impressive, particularly Twin Peaks at Koh TaChai.

Liked the 10-17mm with 1.4x tele, Zen minidome. And glad to see the D7000 (and its master) doing a splendid job!

Thanks for sharing

Al
