Black Magic Cinema Camera

Recommended Posts

Has anyone checked out the NEW video/cinema camera from Black Magic. If not you should check it out it looks quite amazing 2.5K RAW image 13 Stops in a little box that looks like it would be reasonably easy to house except for the touch screen. It does have a LAN-C input which might be a way past the touch screen we will have to wait and see.

A link to some of the specs.

Mark, an interesting camera for the low budget crowd. The test clips on Vimeo were nothing to scream home about. I think the noise level isn't as good as the 5D3 for video but who can knock 12 bit RAW? FPS is low for SSD. I'm actually a bit shocked that it's up to only 30fps @ 2k.

Still @ $3k, it's cheap.

If they can build a housing for an iPad, I'm pretty sure they can do it for this camera :) There must be a way to build a capacitive or resistance based feedback into the housing window, or even a sonic/IR one.

This is incredible and this camera will definitely fill a niche....with Davinci Resolve thrown in! BMD is a good company to deal and have worldwide support. Knock Out Punch for the big boys. Wonder what Sony, Canon and Panny is going to do now?.....I would hazard a guess they never anticipated this.

For full RAW 2K video, $3000 is a steal. It's funny, I was just saying in another thread that I thought there was a niche to be filled here.

I'd bet that firmware updates could increase the framerate, especially at 1080P.

PLEASE MAKE A HOUSING for it ?!!! :):):)

Heh, if only it were all about what I wanted...I think this is probably more in John E's realm, what with all the accessories and different ports that would be required to support all the lens possibilities.

I can see the touchscreen being a major hurdle for the UW crowd, though...the LANC might be helpful for shooting controls, but you can't control menu functions through LANC (it's not part of the standard).

Yeah I kinda thought that if the electronic control could be "hacked" - an electronic control housing would be very compact. Mechanical to capacitative screen could be done. Look at some of the Iphone housings out there. Not an elegant solution. From what I know the Canon EF Mount is not difficult for ports.

BMD will sell bucket loads of these cameras.

My prediction...someone bound to make a housing :)

Well I'm going to wait for the DNG clips before I get excited again. I was all oogly @ the Ikonoskop and that turned out to be boring!

The BMDCC is still probably a S16 sensor. I'm pretty sure that the D800 and 5D3 will give it a run for ISO performance, plus the 5D3 has All-I and there'll be plenty of housings for it.

These guys seem to have the touch screen thing sorted out and a great looking solution too.

http://www.dive-xtras.com/pages/accessorie...ater_tablet.asp

To have 12-bit RAW files recorded at 2432 x 1366 for $3000 is still pretty amazing.

Potential problems for underwater I feel is the crop factor of 2.3x. I would be interested to know what the FOV is with the sigma 8-16mm.

NAB ain't over yet. There might be more surprises.

This year is going to be seriously interesting for video folks.....:) :) :)

That's one solution. It's not quantum physics! As for WA lenses with the BMCC, I think it'll be caught with an in-between nowhere crop size, sorta like the APS-H 1D series of old. Like I said, one has to be careful before getting all happy over a camera nowadays, especially with so many choices!

Those disasters in Asia really showed how much things are dependent on Asian output! This surge of cameras has to be one of the biggest in a long while.

I'm sure John E is up at NAB as we write. The cam, at that price, looks to be able to be a fantastic boon in many ways tho I am surprised at its low bit rate. A housing for it will determine how many here will jump ship.

That touchscreen housing looks cool but don't know how lights would be attached and the ergonomics of that setup might be a bit awkward.

This hasn't been confirmed but my publisher told me that the Canon 5D3 has a major problem with the screen passing through light to the sensor which then may provide false readings or something along those lines. Any one know of this issue?

Sorry: :)

Just to confirm that Canon issued an advisory about a light leakage issue with the Canon 5D Mark III on the 15th-we posted about it here on that date:

http://wetpixel.com/i.php/full/canon-5d-ma...dvisory-issued/

Contrary to the DPG article, no-one has had one of these cameras underwater, so we don't know if using them inside a housing will affect them. Given that they have to be electronically triggered, it is unlikely that there will be any light leakage inside a housing. In fact, using one inside a housing will probably negate the problem entirely!

Wetpixel will be one of the first groups to test the 5D Mark III underwater-please stay tuned to the front page.

Re: 5D3

I believe the issue is that the leak is internal, and thus affects metering. It doesn't say which LCD panel, so I'm assuming it's the top one. I don't think it'll be much of an issue if there is enough light coming through the lens, plus if you are shooting in manual, the AE metering is merely a guide. I don't remember it jumping stops when I had it in video mode in daylight. I'll test it again once I get my body back.

The people who discovered this issue were probably astrophotographers.

It's roo bad that's only up to 32 fps. Maybe in 720p.

What housing will you be using or do you have to wait until one is made for it?

Apologies :) again.

Steve,

We will use the first housing that becomes available for it!

We have asked all our colleagues in the industry to supply us with a housing as soon as they have one available. No one does yet :)

Once there is one available, we will be posting about it on the front page.

Little bit of an update. Got a sneak peek on this BMDCC and it's errr... interesting. 3 ISO settings: 400, 800 and 1600. No O/EIS of any kind. Everyone who saw the LCD monitor thought out loud...external monitor!

Still, RAW files for $3k! First batch of 2000 sold out already!

Whoever eventually makes a housing for it should keep in mind that the internal battery is non-interchangeable and provide enough room in the housing to use an external battery. Even a welded flat-pack of 10 AA NiMH cells should be enough to make it a viable in-field camera.

Looking forward to trying one as soon as it's released...

I am not aware of any company looking to make a housing for it and I have contacted a couple of them. One representative said that it is rather poor in low light. I wouldn't know myself tho

Prblem is that you need an external battery because the internal one is just a backup.

Strange sentence, first real world shoot are just coming out in these days...

I found this:

Vimeo doesn't support 2.5k streaming playback yet so DOWNLOAD THE ORIGINAL FILE!!

Hey Davide,

Not sure what is so strange about the sentence. I respected the individual's anonymity and reported on what he said which was that it wasn't too good in low light. Without mentioning his name, be assured that he is a major player when it comes to underwater housings and cams. I do have a friend in Arizona who just bought one. He is not an underwater shooter and I am waiting to hear what he thinks of it.
