reqeust to use an image of mine

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - I know that this has been a big topic around here for awhile and I have been paying attention. I really liked the recent video that was posted about getting paid for the use of our photography. Just so happens, that I got an email through Flickr this week from someone requesting permission to use a particular photo to illustrate an article about best diving spots around the world. This is intended for online use. No indications of compensation or otherwise. So after some thought, this is what I initially sent out today about their request.

"Thank you for looking over my portfolio. If you could send me a link to the portal so I can review it that would be helpful. In addition, please let me know about the compensation for the use of my photograph. I will get back to you as soon as possible after this with my answer to your kind request."

So..how did I do? HOw is this for a start to the conversation?

Thanks for your help - DiverPam

Thanks for the feedback. In follow-up, no response after I sent my reply. Seems like they are not interested if compensation is involved.

No surprise there Pam ;-) A while ago I received a similar request from a publisher of nature books who justified the absence of any fees by stating that the author was donating all royalties to a wildlife trust. I replied that my commercial rates may also be similarly donated. My images were not used...

Similar experience...nearly...

A charity contacted me asking if they could use some images for a book...they had no budget etc etc etc. Photographers were donating for 'good exposure' (yeah, that one again) so a polite reply indicating how much use right would be, and why I charged was sent.

No surprises...nothing came back...and then out of the blue an email from the 'no budget' charity arrived. They couldn't find the subject elsewhere and had suddenly found some money...

Stand your ground. Be polite but firm when it comes to asking for payment. If they really want your image, they will find the money. Just like they do for the CEO's salary.

Even on your website, or Vimeo and Youtube, always watermark anything before you put it up. They can't steal it if it is watermarked.

Well they can infringe...but if so, one can add a percentage for flagrancy to the fee...I did just that with one infringer and increased the fee by x4. They paid.
