Which camera and housing?

Recommended Posts

Hi needing a little advice,

I am looking for a camera and housing for a decent price that gets some good photos.

I dive both tropical but the majority of my frequent diving is on the west coast of Scotland, thus i need something that can cope in low light conditions. I would like a compact camera and with what little experience i have i guess something that can be manually white balanced? I have been having a scout around and reading reviews and whilst the canon G12 appeals i think it may be a little out of my student budget... so i am looking for something £200-400 roughly and 2nd hand/refurbished cameras are an option depending on the cond. and warranty options.

I have seen some great review of the the lumix DMX LX3 however locating a housing seems quite difficult?

Preferably i don't want anything to bulky that will require strobes (which i think the LX3 needs). I have done some under water photography already but am now a little out of the loop as to what is good but also not overly priced.

any help/suggestions of what and where to get it would be appreciated.

Aloha,

I am new to this forum and dont have to much experience. I have a Canon G7 for sale with the Canon WP-DC11 housing. The housing is in brand new condition and the camera is great. The housing comes with counter weights and straps. I have all the manuals and original accessories that came with both. I was trying to get $250 for both but I am willing to deal. Let me know if you are interested, and if not, good luck, the underwater world is amazing.

Hey thanks for getting in touch,

Sounds interesting but do you know its quality of underwater photo's particularly in less than tropical conditions? The g7 is 2006/07 design so its getting a tad old by technology standards, and i am not sure if it is quite what i am looking for, do you have any sample underwater photies you have taken etc?

cheers

I've had and tried a bunch of cameras over the last 10 years. The big problem with all of the canon G cameras is the frustratingly slow auto focus.

Today, they still are the worst of the high end camera AF performance.

I would be looking at a panasonic lx5 or lx3 used. These have raw and superb autofocus. Ikelite housings.

Or the oly xz1 and oly housing, or ike housing.

I was using a G-10 in canon housing with Inon s2000 strobe... until the housing flooded in Roatan. While I really llike the results I decided to get the Oly xz-1 and oly housing to replace it. The XZ-1 has a faster AF, is more compact for travel purposes and a better sensor. Also, oly housings are better made than the canon ones.

Will be using it for the first time the last week in June on the T+C Explorer II. I also use a +10 subsee for supermacro.
