Oceanshutter 121 Posted June 15, 2012 Hello all, I will be headed to Komodo in July and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Merpati Airlines carry on luggage, and checked luggage? Both my wife and I have full DSLR gear that we typically take as carry ons using the 2 think Tank internationals and 2 think tank shapeshifter backpacks. Will they weigh these? Will they make us check them? How about checked luggage? We normally have 1 suitcase for clothes, and 2 bags with Dive gear. I have heard we might be able to "barter" with them on overweight charges. Over-sized carry-on is usually taken from the passengers at the aircraft steps and stowed at the rear in propeller aircraft. With bigger jets (say 737), they seem to baulk at goats! Of course, I'm not one to push that very hard. As for carry ons. My wife and I had 2 think tank internalitionals and 2 shape shifter backpacks. Both fully loaded, and they did not weight them. They did put the rollers in the back of the plane...twin prop going to bima. And we had to put the backpacks under the seats in front of us, as the overheads wouldn't take the size of the backpacks....we load them up. Thanks, Chris Yes it was out of DPS. As far as the service....Merparti was actually better than I thought. However, my expectations were extremely low. Most important....we arrived safely..Second most important...my bags made it. So they suceeded. Check in was a bit of a pain, with extra luggage. I told them that it was sports equipment (dive gear), and they still suggested that I should pay for the extra 9KG so I pulled out the "but all of the other airlines give you 30KG for sports equipment???" End result - no fees. I also carried on my LowePro Trekker 600 AW, and a smaller North Face backpack for my laptop. No questions, no weighing. If you are one of the first ones to board the plane you'll have room to stow them overhead. When everything fills up they'll make people check a carry-on that won't fit under the seat. Did you buy your ticket in advance or did you buy when you got there? I'm going to Dili on Sept 1 but have had problems purchasing a tkt in advance.
