Stewart L. Sy 12 Posted July 14, 2012 Hi Folks Just thought I'd bring this topic to light, it's happening literally in my own backyard of Richmond BC. The owner of this restaurant feels that the Chinese people are "part of the food chain" and are thus entitled to eat Shark's Fin Soup. http://www.richmondreview.com/news/162283206.html The arguements put forth by Mr. Chung are both uneducated and dangerous. For those on FB, you can post your comments here but not sure how long they'll last as they've been deleting them regularly. https://www.facebook.com/jadeseafood It's people like this who perpetuate such lies and misunderstanding that makes shark conservation such a hard sell in the Chinese community. As one of Chinese descent, I wholeheartedly support a worldwide ban on sharks fin. Stu
Drew 0 Posted July 15, 2012 Well part of his argument is from the PR "factoids" of shark finner associations. If it were not for the dire population drop in sharks around the world, he'd have a valid point about tradition. Every culture has some tradition that isn't good for the planet. I do think a ban will drive the commodity underground where it'll be hard to monitor. It is however the only way to effectively halt consumption until the educational drives catch up. On a lighter side: “If they’re not being hunted or they’re not being killed, a lot of things would change too. The way I see it, the Chinese people have become part of the food chain that keeps things in check.” With 1.6 billion and rising, his "assertions" taken literally, gives "ordering chinese food" a whole new meaning!!! JimSwims 31 Posted July 15, 2012 Good on the local councils for stepping up and making an attempt to stop it in their backyard. Pity it is left to them and the bans aren't coming from the federal level. Cheers, Jim.
