tdpriest 115 Posted October 4, 2012 Thom Hogan has written that the D800 is a more convincing upgrade from the D300 than from the D7000 and, by implication, from the D700. That suggests that the D600 is only a convincing upgrade for those with quite old cameras moving into FX, where there is a good reason for choosing FX over DX. I rather suspect that my reasons for shifting to FX were not all that logical, but, having made that decision, I do not at all feel that I should have waited for the D600... ... I have to say that a D400 based on the D300 but with a new, high-pixel-density sensor, modern image processing electronics and the D800 AF module with a nice large, bright viewfinder would be closer to my Platonic ideal of a camera to house than even the D800! UWphotoNewbie 1 Posted October 4, 2012 Time will tell. This discussion is sounding more like the "Is DX Done" thread. I have my doubts that there will be another pro bodied DX camera. I think once I saw the D700 it was clear to me that DX was headed the way of APS film. It took a bit longer than I thought but with the two disasters last year it is understandable. For my part I'm still struggling with the benifit of the upgrade and the question of which camera to house. In waiting several years for the mythical D800, I had convinced myself that the D7000 gave me almost everything I wanted in an upgrade from the D70--except FX. I bought some pro lenses sold my 12-24 for a tokina 11-16 and agreed to wait it out another generation or two. Then the D600 comes along. What did I get for a $2K upgrade? Better low light capability and better perspective range when using the big 3 lenses. The kind of camera I can get confortable with for the next several generations. Otherwise not much. The AF sensors are crowded and the max shutter speed and flash sync are a step back. The 11-16 seems a better choice UW than the 14-24mm and the 15mm sigma on FX doesn't seem to work as well as the 10.5 mm did on DX in domes. Hmmm. Two steps forward one step back. Jahworks 0 Posted October 7, 2012 Hello, people. I'm new to the forum and do not speak very good English. I am Brazilian, student of marine biology and would like to know from you whether a D600 or nautica + + Ikelite PRO-2800 LED Video Lite + lens? suggestion is a good camera to start the dive. My idea is to shoot and macro shots. Any suggestions of camera and lens? thank you.
pKai 1 Posted October 10, 2012 My .02... If I were a Nikon shooter and were looking to upgrade from something lesser, the D600 would not even get a first glance, much less a second. Sorry. Yes, the D800 is $1,000 more, but by the time you factor in the housing you need to buy for either, etc, the difference is not that much for what you get unless D600 housings are considerably cheaper. I suspect the same will be said on the Canon side with the 6D vs 5D3 when the 6D is released.
