One video light or two?

Recommended Posts

I am shooting a lot of video with my OM-D and want to invest in some high quality lighting. My question is, shouild I use one or two lights? I can get two Sola 4000s or Keldan 4Vs that total 8,000 lumens, for around $3200-3500 for both, or one FIX Fisheye that has 7000 lumens for $2000 (or one WASP Video that has 18,000!!! lumens $2500 does anyone know about this light??).

While one light is easier to manage than two (and also much cheaper), is there an artistic/techincal reason to prefer two lights? The new lights are so compact that two do not deter me if that is best. I did try a video with two lights but got crossing shadows with them that were not so nice, but maybe I am not using them correctly?

I am new to video and shoot stills with dual strobes, but my housing/trays (Nauticam) can also take up to 2 video lights as well.

Thanks for any advice!

definitely two. Although one light does give some cool shadowing that can really make for some interesting video, especially in macro stuff, two is always better. You don't have to run them at the same power, keep one lower to still give some shadow for instance. However, for wider shots the spread of two is much better and if you have any issues with one light (bad charge, flood etc) then you always have that second one with you. I can't comment on any of the specific lights though

Yep, two is better.

In addition to Mike's comments, having two is good as you can angle one up and one down when you are "trucking" into from a MS to a CU shot.

I'm happy with my Sola 4000s. I have them on a pair of 1" locline arms for flexibility. About a year now and they are still going strong. Lots of power variability. Only need them on full power when competing with the sun. Night diving, I keep them on a 3 setting. Lights up the ocean. I can get a couple one-hour dives out of them if I keep the power at 3 or lower. Fully charge during a two-hour surface interval.

2 sola 4000s rock my world. I couldn't live without them now.
