Upgrade from D70s - what are my options

Recommended Posts

I have a D70s in Subal housing with flat port and 8 inch dome. I only go diving every couple of years at the moment as I have a young family and not much spare cash.

I also have a D7000 which would be much nicer to use underwater. What are my options do you think? I'm happy to sell the D70s and housing if I thought I could get something to house my D7000 for not much more additional cost.

I'm guessing I'm really going to have to stick with what I've got but would be interested to hear any options that I haven't thought of just in case...

The D7000 has gotten a lot of good reviews on here. Since you already have the camera body and lens, then from a cost perspective housing the D7000 seems like a good option. If you went with another Subal housing, then you already have your port and a dome to go with. So your initial outlay would be for your housing.

Good luck with you decision process - DiverPam

If you are only diving every two years renting may be worth investigating.

And the D70 still should still take good photos.

Have you considered buying an Ikelite housing? It may not be as good ergonomically as Subal but it works fine and only costs $1500 http://www.submergec...ikon-d7000.html A friend of mine who is a very good underwater photographer likes to upgrade his set-up almost every time Nikon introduces a new, better camera and therefore chooses to use Ikelite housings for cost reasons. He is very satisfied with his Ikelite 6801.70 housing. I would imagine you could get enough by selling your D70s, Subal housing and ports to at least cover the cost of an Ikelite 6801.70 housing.

I think what diver pam said above makes the most sense. Get a subal housing & use existing ports. You could also see what other housing makers have subal port adapters, you may find you can buy a cheaper housing & still use your existing ports
