bear35 11 Posted April 3, 2013 Hi, I have just booked a trip to the Bahamas with Jim Abernethy, I am after some advice on if it is shallow enough at Tiger beach to take pictures with a red filter rather than strobes??? I am thinking about the recycle time of the strobes as it would be nice to have the option to take pictures quickly. Any advice on this topic or advice and tips for this trip in general would be fantastic. Thank you
tdpriest 115 Posted April 3, 2013 The surface is too near: you will get too much red in the diffracted sunlight... ... but it's almost shallow enough to do ambient light without a filter, or use low-power on strobes to put colour onto the sharks, which will be really close at Tiger Beach. A red filter might work at the slightly deeper reef sites, but you need a shutter speed sufficient to freeze the sharks. The hard part is having eyes in the back of your head: you need a sixth sense - shark-awareness!

tdpriest 115 Posted November 21, 2013 What lens(es) did you use on that trip? 16-35mm? Mostly a Sigma 15mm, but, yes, a 16-35mm too.
Kevster 6 Posted November 21, 2013 (edited) Great photos. I am heading out on the Shearwater on Monday. Weather forecast is not great, 20-30 mph winds. How much shelter is there out near Tiger beach? I am expecting a rough crossing but hoping once we get to the Bahamas there will be shelter from swell/winds. Edited November 21, 2013 by Kevster
jcclink 8 Posted November 21, 2013 Tiger Beach is a shallow plateau away from the islands. The leeward side can offer some shelter but it's not like being close to shore. If it's too rough Jim will find a good place to hide.
tdpriest 115 Posted November 21, 2013 If it's too rough Jim will find a good place to hide. Too rough is when the 'fridge won't stay shut but no-one falls over because there's no space... ... but who needs luxury, anyway?
