Canon 24-105mm underwater?

I am looking for some informantion and sample images about the usage of 24-105mm on a full frame camera, but didn't find too much. Anyone using that lens in a dome port?

Hi famorim,

 

I've used it on a couple of dives on 5DIII. It works, and can be useful, but not a lens I'd personally use a lot. It's nice for getting some extra reach on a really shy subject like the reef shark in the shot here. This is not a great shot, but shows what you can expect with it - shooting through a lot of water definitely reduces IQ. The lens barrel extends a lot when zooming so not an easy lens to place correctly in a dome. I used it with the Zen DP-200 on the Nauticam housing - I think I used a 60mm extension but would need to check on that.

 

BTW, there is another new lens in this class that I am quite interested in - the new Canon 24-70 f/4. Very sharp throughout the range, AND it has a macro mode switch built into the lens. I have not yet shot this underwater but hope to soon. It is a sweet carry around lens though... I borrowed one from Ryan for a week and really like it.

as I have used this lens many times for topside photos due their flexibility, some times when need to carry less equipment, it could be an option for some trips and it share the same extension ring then 24-70mm that is in my wish list for next months, then I will not loose the investment on the extension ring.

 

Based on your photo I can see it works better then I was expecting. Probably it will not work well all the way, but from should work from 24 to 70...

I tried to use mine on my 5DII a while back, with a teleconverter behind an 8" dome and struggled to get any focus at all. I was hoping to use it at around 35 - 50mm, but after a very short period of time I gave up on the idea. Possibly different extension rings would have helped. I'd be interested to know what you use if you do get it working.

Liz, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 lens minimum focusing distance is 1.48'' /.45m from the sensor plane, so that means you will likely require a close up lens (a +2 or +3 with an 8'' to 9.25" dome should be sufficient), this will enable the camera to focus on the projected virtual image, which is closely located in front of the dome port surface.

 

The smaller the dome, the closer the virtual images and the stronger the close up lens will need to be.

 

Flat port are not subjected to this refractive phenomenon, so you could potentially use the 24-105mm + teleconverter behind a flat port and get results, mind you the focus is likely to be dreadfully slow with this combination.

I tried the 24-105mm on topside with TC 2x, the focus speed isn't so fast, but I think the big issue is about sharpness and colors. I hated the results.
