Simultaneous use of pop-up flash and hotshoe? D800.

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how to make the hotshoe trigger a flash at the same time as the flash is popped up? Popping it up seems to switch off the hotshoe... Nikon D800. I want to use optical strobes and a floating radio trigger at the same time...

I wonder if the PC socket will work with the flash up. My guess is that it will. Easy enough to wire that up to a synch socket.

I think it will, but in the D800 housing there is stuff in the way, unfortunately. Unless I remove some

control mechanisms...

It should do. That's the point of a PC flash socket!

Pete. With ingenuity it might be possible to cut down and modify a PC flash socket cable so that it is low profile enough to enable it to 'squeeze' into a housing with controls in place - the black plastic screw in cap is relatively thick - although this may be very fiddly. My housing only runs flashes from the PC socket so I no longer bother with the hotshoe - but on my camera the PC flash socket is on the side with a little easier access.

I used the floating radio trigger (home made thing using the cheapest ebay triggers) and removed the optical cables from my Inon Z240s and rotated them so the optical slave sensor was upwards. I had two flashes behing the camera position outside the pool with radio recievers, pointing at the Inons to trigger them. Then I had an optically triggered underwater backlight strobe and another outside the pool for a shaft of light coming from top left. At least that was the idea. This exercise made me realise that Zena Holloway will have no competition from me for a long time! Like ever!

I taught Zena to dive in Mallorca when she came to stay at one of my apartments with her cousin. Years later, when I mentioned it to her, she didn't remember me. Ah, well, she was only fifteen back in those days!

By the way Pete, my latest housing (not mentioning the brand for fear of antagonising the Nauticam Mafia) came supplied with one optical connection and one hard-wired. I changed for two hard-wired because I am an old dinosaur but I notice that there is room for the pop-up flash to work even with the hard-wired synch and leak detector LED in place on the hot shoe. (I just checked)

John, I think the issue is with the camera rather than space in the housing, or the fit of the hoe shoe connection. :)

Using the pop-up flash disables the hot shoe signal on the D800.

I have tried to figure out a way around it, but cannot figure out a way beyond using the USB.

I think that using optical sensors slaving off a "master" flash triggered either electrically or via fiber optic will be the simplest.
