looking for a videography course or motivated instructor in Egypt

Hi, my name is Roeland and I’m a newbie on videography (with no prior skills on photography either)

 

Two years ago I started filming with a Gopro hero 2 and last year with a Hero 3. After a great holiday at Lembeh street, I realised that I want more from my footage and the GoPro is a great starting tool, but not suited for filming macro. And I love macro! The flooding of my Hero 3 after a few days, gave an opportunity the review my wishes.

 

So last week , after reading a lot of reviews and opinions from others, I bought a Canon HF G25 with a Light & Motion housing . For sure with my limitations as a rookie, I can’t blame the equipment anymore. J Now is time to work on my own skills. By now I’ve read a few books about videography underwater, but still the real work has to be done of course in the water.

 

As my next (main) holiday will be in the Philippines looking for great macro and trying to get some nice footage, I’m planning a trip at the end of September (or October) to Egypt to get familiar with my new equipment and to work on my (basic) skills.

 

Getting to point, I’m looking for a underwater videography course or motivated instructor (during my week in Egypt) to get some/improve my skills. To be clear I’m not looking for a Padi course or interested in any way in some kind of license. I’m just looking for a good course or instructor.

 

Anybody who can help me in the right direction or has great suggestions?

Hi,

I would look for someone who will teach you how to prepare your system for diving first. Then once you know how to keep the important stuff dry, you move onto how to dive. Once you have a very good understanding of that, combine the two.

I see too many people with nice rigs who flood their investment early and go away frustrated, disappointed and out of pocket.

I also see a lot of people who manage to keep their cameras dry but have very little control of themselves underwater, then get frustrated because their shots are shaky or dull in colours. It takes time, commitment, patience and skill to become proficient and you will never stop learning.

Find the right teacher and enjoy.

Red Sea Diving Safaris have a course at their Marsa Shagra Village, close to Marsa Alam (I've been there twice and am going back in October, it's a wonderful place) during the late summer or autumn, I can't remember exactly. The Course Director is a well known videographer (can't remember his name). Unfortunately their website is down but they expect it to be up and running again in a few days. Meanwhile, you can e-mail them at info@redsea-divingsafari.com for information.

Thanks for your comment. Of course you're right. But as I'm not gonna dive in Egypt until September/October, I thought I would have enough time (with help of a friend) to master myself those skills in the time being.

 

As you can read in my post, I don't have many skills on this matter, but I am an experienced diver. That said, doesn't mean that there is always room for improvement.

I stumbled on that course already. It's by Jeff Goodman as instructor. Indeed it looks like a course where I could learn a lot. I've already read his book about videography underwater, with I can recommend to any newbie like me . The problem for me is the period he's giving his course in Egypt. I did inform with them about other options already.
