Olympus OM-D E-M5 freezing/crashing?

Hi,

 

I just got a Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a Nauticam housing, Panasonic 8mm fisheye, Olympus 60mm macro lens. Firmware body 1.6.

 

My buttons/settings are configured same as:

I've only dived with this setup about 10 times and 2 times my camera stopped working underwater. I shoot in Manual Mode. When the camera stops working, it doesn't respond to any button pushes except the LV button (changes from EVF to Monitor). Main dial and Sub-dial still changes Aperture and Shutter. Shutter release does nothing and I can't even turn off the camera. Camera EVF/Monitor stays on until camera runs out of battery; it doesn't fall asleep. Camera displays live image. The flash (lightning bolt) and focus confirmation (green dot) icons in the EVF/Monitor are stuck on. When I remove the battery and put it back in the camera works again. Anyone else have this problem?

 

No floods or leaks and my depth was around 30m deep. I notice this happening usually when I focus then try to take a picture. This problem has happened using both the Panasonic 8mm fisheye and Olympus 60mm macro lenses.

 

Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?

I had this problem occure for a short period of time when I set the shutter release to the F1 button. As soon as I moved the shutter release back the the shutter button problem solved. I don't know if this is a glitch in the way I set the camera up or just a problem with some cameras. Since I am not a big fan of using the F1 release it has not been worth my tIme to have the camera checked out. Perhaps I should try this with the second EM5 body I own and see if the results are the same.

Hi Phil,

 

Thanks for the reply. Hm, interesting. Seems like when my camera crashes it's when I'm in MF mode where my shutter release is the shutter button and my focus is set to the Movie record button. I had a feeling it was that combination. The dive after my camera crashed, I set my camera to S-AF where shutter release button was for the shutter release and focus (half-pressed). No crash on second dive.

 

When your F1 button was set to shutter release, did you have a separate button set to focus?

Has there been any consideration of the SD card that's being used? I only ever use SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s SD cards and only shoot raw. I've never seen a crash whether using MF with focus on movie record button or using just S-AF. Card issues have been implicated in lockups in other cameras. It's highly likely that any SD card issues are less related to price, speed, or performance of the SD card and more related to the manufacturer's interpretation and compliance with standards and/or the card or camera's sensitivity to non-compliance or uncommon timing issues. Shooting RAW+JPG could exacerbate issues with some SD cards. It's possible that such issues may only arise with some SD cards when they get warm. It's also certainly possible that an issue with an SD card only occurs with certain settings.

That's a good point that I've thought of before but forgot to look into more. I think I've always been using Transcend SDHC 10 16GB cards while shooting RAW only. Though, I'm not exactly sure what cards I was using when my camera froze.

I have not had this problem. I only use SanDisk SD cards. Bob
