D70 Pole Cam

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I am jumping the gun a little here considering there aren't any housing currently available for the D70. I'm about ready to make the jump to this DSLR and I have been pondering the idea of how I would be able to setup a pole cam with this camera.

After researching a bit, I have found that the only method of remotely activating this camera would be using the infrared remote. A previous thread using the Z220 with the 5050 brought up the idea that I could use a fiber optic line connected to the remote and routed (somehow) to the front of the camera to activate the shutter.

Does anyone know if the remote instantaneously takes the shot or if there is a few seconds pause (I'm back to shutter lag!)? Can anyone think of any other ways of setting up a pole cam system with this camera?

You can buy the optional infra red remote contoller that works upto 5 meters - the IR receiver seems to be on the front of the camera next to the mode adjuster so should be Ok with the ike housing or with a bit of silver foil you MAY be able to trigger the camera through the back of the sea and sea housing.

Of course I have not done this myself yet  so I may be wrong :) but will let you know regards sea and sea at the end of the month (housing delivery) because I was planning to attempt to rig it for a garden eel shot.

Laz,

You can actually go the plain jane mechanical route and rig up a pulley and lever to actuate the shutter lever on the outside of a housing. Use a bmx bicycle brake lever and an extra long shifter cable (for a tandem bike perhaps) and rig up the other end so that when you squeeze the handle, it pulls the lever on the housing.

Sorry, I know it's not that sexy, but it will work.

Cheers

James

Thanks for the info, guys. Keep me posted on your results, Whitehead. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on the Sea & Sea housing. That is more than likely the housing I will be purchasing.

James,

That's a great idea! If the infrared rig doesn't work out, it's good to know something like what you mentioned could be done. I really don't care if it looks sexy or not. You should see half of the inventions I've got done on my PT-015. I've even got a retractable framer for trying to nail those plankton shots. This will probably end up on the dSLR too.

Why don't you try a hydraulic way. Conect two waterfilled plastic syringes with a long flexible tube. A little tinkering and the hydraulic remote controll is ready to use. Actually, I've tried just on land not underwater, but worked properly.

Laz,

I'm traveling until Monday, but here's some input....

Eric who used his pole cam on my White shark trip last fall is right....Keep it simple with something mechanical. I'm guessing you want something for sharks right behind the boat on our upcoming trip?

Since you usually are trying to shoot LARGE critters with a pole cam camera, use a wide lens, like the cheapie but great Sigma 15mm FE, set focus manually (turn AF OFF) at 1' or slightly less so it'll fire every time you pull the trigger without "hunting". Use a fast enough shutter speed on shutter priority, 1/250 or maybe even faster. Just under the surface at ISO 100-200 you'll get plenty of depth of field for "in your face" shots.

Good luck!

David I can simplfy this further. Just have Jimmy hold your camera and dunk him in and out of the water. LOL

I also think that a mechanical solution is the way to go...However, to answer the question about delay...According to my manual, the remote can be used in delay or instant mode. In both cases, the camera must first aquire focus. In delay mode, it will then wait 2 seconds before triggering. In instant, the shutter will fire immediately after focusing.
