aviddiver.her 3 Posted July 23, 2013 I may have to get a new underwater rig and have been considering the Sony RX 100 with Nautica housing. In reading reviews someone mentioned the battery must be charged in the camera. Yet, in the Un-boxing of the RX100 M2 video posted in another thread he says the battery is the same as the original and shows that it can be removed. If it is removable it would seem an external charger would be available. So, can someone tell me what is so regarding the battery? And, if it must be charged in the camera how long does it take to charge when nearly depleted and how many underwater photos are you getting on a charge? diveski01 1 Posted July 23, 2013 You can buy a charger so that you can charge the battery out of the camera. The one that comes with it connects through the camera so that you can charge without removing the battery from the camera. You can also charge via USB cable from a laptop/PC. I just got the same rig, haven't even used it yet.
aviddiver.her 3 Posted July 23, 2013 Thank you. Do you know approx cost of a charger and spare battery?
diveski01 1 Posted July 23, 2013 I stayed with Sony brand for both. Sony BCTRX Battery Charger $33, and Sony NP-BX1/M8 Lithium-Ion X Type Battery $44, both through Amazon.com. Off-brand options were available for much lower prices, but I didn't want an el cheapo battery in a $1600 rig that would be problematic. Just not worth a few bucks IMHO to risk it. aviddiver.her 3 Posted July 23, 2013 Thanks. I agree, best to stick with Sony.
MikeO 5 Posted July 24, 2013 I got a Digipower TC-55S charger because it took Sony about a year from the original launch of the RX-100 to actually release a charger for it. The Digipower one was less than $30 and works just fine for me, though I did stick with Sony batteries. FWIW . . .
aviddiver.her 3 Posted July 24, 2013 Thanks Mike. Good to know a specific off- brand that someone has had good first hand experience with. Will come in handy if I run into availability problems.
JamesR 26 Posted July 25, 2013 (edited) I have a "wasabi power" charger that works fine with my Sony batteries...no problems at all. It comes with a 12v dc power cord to charge while driving, which can be handy. Edited July 25, 2013 by CamelToad
