Why is the Canon G1X not popular?

Recommended Posts

From the spec, its sensor is bigger than Micro43, yes, its video feature is crippled, but the fact that it's not interchangable lens system and offer such a great sensor, yet the Olympus EM5 is still popular. Am I missing something?

As for the G1X battery life, I don't see it would be a problem that it wouldn't last for 1 dive, so replacing battery after every dive is not that big of an issue compare to the complexity and cost of interchangeable lens system (dome, port etc).

May be the next version of G1X has more potential?

There are some pictures here of a G1X user and they are beautiful.

Some people claim that the autofocus is too slow to be usable under water but i use often a G12 and even if the autofocus of my D800 is much quicker

i personally consider the Canon compact camera autofocus as more than enough fast.
The lack of a broader choice of housings makes it also less tempting to house this camera.

Changing the batteries between dives is one of the main reason for flooding the housing, well not directly changing them, but opening and closing the housing on a rocking boat

with maybe wet hands and wind blowing around lint and hairs, so having battery lasting 2 dives is definitively a big advantage!

Thanks! Yeah I was curious about why no manufacturer want to make housing for it besides Canon. I don't know how bad is the focusing speed, but it would be interesting to see what they would fix for the next version.

I have seen some nice photos with the G1X as well...if I can find one for a nice price, I intend to pick it up.

Nauticam website doesn't have it, so it probably was made as prototype and never get sold. Regardless, its video capability is very limited. My potential next upgrade could be Panasonic GX7, or the GH3. Seems like Panasonic is the only company that make portable camera with P/A/S/M control during shooting video.

BTW, what's Canon's equivalent to Olympus' 5-Axis Image Stabilization system? I feel like Canon is really falling behind.

My mistake Nauticam never made an housing for it.

The Sony RX100 has full video control other than the Panasonic LX7 those are the only cameras that I know that tick almost all boxes

Yeah, the RX100 do have P/A/S/M, but the custom white balance menu is not that user friendly, not sure about the RX100 II.

The only reason to upgrade from the LX-7 is for better Image Stabilization (5-axis or Mega O.I.S) and the 50Mbit IPB and 72mbit ALL-I modes. Still dreaming about 4K shooting coming to a point and shoot camera, but we all know that would be at least 5 years away, he he.
