49 ft operating depth and max wide of 28 mm equivalent

A good system for snorkelers and humping through the jungle, but not a Nikonos

Absolutely. Really just a splash unit, but one wonders if they may continue the trend.

Wont be offloading my original Nikonos bodies in a hurry !

I wonder if it floods as regularly as Nikonoses did?

It helps that you don't have to open it up after 24 or 36 shots.

Rephrase that one: "as Nikonos users did" Wasn't the fault of the camera

My own Nikon-nose sneezes, but rarely floods...

I did...

... and was glad with the sudden improvement in my images after investing in a housed camera!

I doubt you would have any easy time offloading them except to an antique dealer so it is a good thing you are keeping them for now LOL.

I truly loved my Nikonos V with dual SB-103's. A modern digital version would be very cool and this one is *almost* there, but it fails on two fronts, one which can be fixed:

- 20meter max depth. Really? That kills it as an U/W camera.

- They should have released it from day one with the 6.7-13mm W/A waterproof lens. That would seem to be a no-brainer, but apparently not. Perhaps they will release it later.

On the "easy to flood" thing for old Nikonos, well I never had a problem with mine - it was pretty simple and I had to change rolls after every dive. I owned both a Nikonos IV and Nikonos V.

The cool thing about it would be the extremely compact footprint. But of course, it will likely be overpriced.

The thing is, you could buy this:
and this:
For $348 and have an underwater setup that could actually go down to 40m.
I do wonder sometimes who is calling the shots at Nikon. They have lots of "almost" great ideas that with just a little extra thought in the design process could be fantastic.

I'm sure the quality on the AW-1 is better but the depth is almost the same as my AW100

Close to my dream setup, just misses:

-a higher depth rating, let's say 60m

-an included vacuum check: soon everyone will have one on underwater housing, it will become difficult to accept a setup that is not protected by this

ah wait, even better setup:

-same thing with a full frame camera. After all, my Nauticam housing for Olympus OM-D is about the same size of my Nikon D3...

It would be nice to have a lightweight d800e with lenses that is waterproof to 10ATA without a housing. One day......soon????

Tired of 45 pound carryons.

Interesting, but IMHO it would have needed the same rating as the Nikonos to matter really, i.e. 60m. Then there's some margin for sports diving depth and a clear delclaration of the dive-proofness from Nikon.

But who knows, maybe it's around the corner.

Then we just need a 15mm equiv fish eye with dome or water adapted optics...

/O
