nortoda1 13 Posted October 4, 2013 Nikon are to announce the D610 on Tuesday. I've used a D300 for the last 3 years and really like it. But I need something with much better low light performance as I now do much of my diving in to wrecks in 60-80m range in Irish waters. Was considering the D600, it seems to be fantastic at low light and is very reasonably priced, the only thing that puts me off is the really AF system. I've considered the D800, but it is considerably more expense, and I definitely dont need 36MP. Rumours so far is that there will only be a slight increase in fps, from 5.5 to 6. Increase the area the AF covers and I would buy one in a shot. Anyone out there using the D600 and how you finding it?

raarsen 8 Posted October 4, 2013 I use the D600 in a Nauticam housing and I like it a lot. Amazing resolution, it brings out the tiniest details when you shoot macro. Very crisp images. Great viewfinder, I agree on the AF system although you can learn to live with it. Great performance in low light. I do have the debris issue though, with dust and stuff falling on the sensor. Learned to clean the sensor myself which is not very hard to do. The image below was taken yesterday with the D600 and a Nikon 60mm macro + 1,4 TC + 36mm extension tube. Best regards, --Rob
nortoda1 13 Posted October 5, 2013 Nice shot Rob. Will wait till Tuesday and see what Nikon announce. If it is only the fps they upgrade, might try to get a discontinued D600.

As a D800 owner, I will recommend you a D610 or unless D810 is out there. 36MP is very useful for nature photography and the AF on D800 is awesome. However, D800 shares the same dust/oil on sensor problem as D600 does. My guess is that D610 will have an upgraded version of AF.
adamhanlon 0 Posted October 6, 2013 Hi Mark, This is interesting. I knew about the dust spot problem with the D600, are people getting the same on the D800 too? Mine seems OK. Anyone else having the problem with it? Adam

Adam I've cleaned my sensors myself from the outset, but I've had much more trouble with the D800 than with any of my earlier Nikons. ehanauer 37 Posted October 7, 2013 My D7000 is a dust bunny magnet when shooting video. I think it's because the sensor gets hot and bakes the dust to the AA filter.

I use a D300s underwater (I used to have a D300 which is pretty much identical in this respect) and a D600 on land. The D300s has much better AF than the D600 does so I suspect it will perform better at depth (for AF). I've had a little dusting on my D600's sensor but nothing to really worry about. It needed a clean once (I did it myself) and since then it's been happy.
nortoda1 13 Posted October 8, 2013 Thanks for the information Alistair. AF not really an issue for deep wrecks, but available light is. Was thinking the D600 would offer the ability to push the iso to 3200 or even 6400 with little sacrafice in quality. I am a little concerned that the AF coverage would irritate me for more general uw photography, macro etc.
nortoda1 13 Posted October 8, 2013 How does the US rrp of $1995 equate to a uk price of stg1799. Someone's having a laugh, I'll either be purchasing a d610 from the US or buying a d800 from uk for stg 1950, no way I'd pay stg1799 for a D610.
adamhanlon 0 Posted October 8, 2013 Hi all, Full details of the D610 are on the front page here: http://wetpixel.com/articles/nikon-unveils-the-d610 The short version is that it is a D600 with a new shutter mechanism and an improved auto white balance system. spencerjb22 4 Posted October 12, 2013 I used to have the D600 - but the dust issue was just too bad. I do a lot of land stuff with small apertures and it was a real pain.I'd often literally have oil/dust all over the place. I cleaned the sensor myself but after even a few hundred clicks it was back. I now have the D800 and can honestly say that yes, you do get bits of dust, but in comparison with the D600 it's no where near. It's not an issue at all to me anymore, but the D600 was a pain in the arse. Shame as it is such a nice camera.
Akulamd 3 Posted October 14, 2013 Do you think that D610 will require a major housing re-design from Aquatica and Nauticam? I am thinking about taking the plunge into UW FX format and seems like D610 is the way to go for me. I just want to know, if the housings are going to be available for in the near future. Alex_Tattersall 90 Posted October 14, 2013 Signs are pointing toward it being identical physically to the D600, fingers crossed.
Mark K 5 Posted October 18, 2013 The problem of D600 dust on sensor comes from shutter and ...D800 is not immune from that. Luckily I use D800 for portrait more but the unavoidable stopping down for macro shooting underwater will definite bring more visible dust to your images. I bought a Canon 5d3 later which has much better build quality
spencerjb22 4 Posted October 20, 2013 I used to clean the 600 sensor and after around 500 shots, there would be as many as 40 + spots. I would get the D610/D800 if you're not wanting on-going frustration.
nortoda1 13 Posted October 20, 2013 went with the D800 in the end, much better AF and its been on the market long enough to iron out bugs. I definitely don't need 36mp, but they I'm thinking I will be al ot more critical of keepers, which can only be a good thing.
