A.Y. 15 Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) FWIW, A7r autofocus: Tried out the A7 at the Sony store several times now (a dangerous sign that requires wife's intervention before it's too late ) and noticed the FF hybrid autofocus system is quite a bit faster than NEX-6, 5T, & 5R all with hybrid AF. Unfortunately, A7r is not yet available for a side-by-side comparison. Edited December 15, 2013 by A.Y.
Mark K 5 Posted December 17, 2013 Saw the prototype product. It looked only 2/3 the size of a 70D housing...
Mark K 5 Posted December 17, 2013 A7r may be a pain to use underwater with the CDAF only. Even the so-called FDAF or hybrid-AF on sensor don't prove to be as reliable as any mid-end DSLR at all. I am not so excited yet until someone has dived with the camera(s) with a decent lens. Dear Edward...spot you on Sunday but you were too busy chatting to others. Back to A7's focusing capability. I believe what you said is quite true. I have mine for three weeks and eventually will use it for underwater...just let me know when your housing will be ready. I also bought a new D610 which seems much faster in AF...at least from my gut feeling in combination of my current Nikon glass. It won't be fair because most of my lenses used on A7 are either MF from Nikon/Canon or those Sony ones via an adapter. However, your A7 housing is even smaller than that of a D70's. FuAn 0 Posted December 18, 2013 Got the A7 now for a couple of weeks it's great and a lot of fun! Some nice lenses have been announced... Can't wait to get the nauticam housing!!! Hope Edward will bring one to Shanghai in March... ;-) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Mark K 5 Posted January 8, 2014 I have been using A7 in the past month, along with my D800/5D3. The image quality is incredible, size very small and the controls near perfect. With single hand I can control all my aperture, shutter, iso, etc and the viewfinder is even better than an optical one, providing both focusing and exposure information in details. I can use my old old lenses back without a problem. The catch is ...the shutter is very loud. I thought I preferred my dSLRs more but photos came back ...I found 70% were shot using A7
A.Y. 15 Posted January 9, 2014 It'll be great to see a photo, showing the size difference between a traditional full-frame dSLR housing, an A7 housing, and a nex housing.
jmauricio 24 Posted January 10, 2014 But the problem is that it is still not very wide - good for shooting big creatures, less good for scenery. Although I guess you could use the Sea & Sea 12mm - although I only own the 15mm Nikonos myself. Alex Indeed. I actually got to play around a Sony A7R + Nikonos - NEX adapter + some lenses. Here are some comparison shots with the Nikonos 15mm, Sea & Sea 12mm and NEX 7 with the 16mm + FE adapter (15mm 35mm equiv. & 180 degree FoV according to Sony). The FoV is closest between the 16mm + FE with the Sea & Sea 12mm. 15mm not bad either. As Alex says, 12mm may be good for wrecks and reefs while the 15mm with animals. The 12mm looks really good on the A7R, reasonably sharp corners and no color shift. zero lightroom processing other than converting to jpg
Phil Rudin 428 Posted January 10, 2014 The Nikonos 15mm was the gold standard of wide lenses for decades because of its small size and great image quality. It is nice to see the rebirth of this lens that arguably accounted for the most published U/W images in history. With no W/A lenses yet announced by Sony for this excellent camera the Nikonos 15mm seems like a no brainer.

The Sea & Sea 12mm looks very good above especially for f/8 on full frame. Assume you don't have to stop down the external lens - only the camera - or the view could be pretty dark in dark places. Really impressive sharpness and contrast. Alex
Mark K 5 Posted January 11, 2014 I bought a Samyang 14 f2.8 for my D800 and it was a great manual lens on a7
Phil Rudin 428 Posted January 11, 2014 As with the introduction of the Sony NEX system just not many lens choices at this time so the Nikonos style lenses are helping to fill the gap. Regarding old technology I guess the most commonly used is the SLR
johnspierce 25 Posted January 11, 2014 If Alex is still monitoring this thread... Would you happen to have access to both the new A7 housing and a D800 housing for a photo size comparison?
Phil Rudin 428 Posted January 11, 2014 Nauticam housing for the A7/A7r is between OMD EM1 size and D800 size. Also it will have a new port opening size between the DSLR size and mini or mirrorless size. Will come ready to install optical viewfinder. W/A lenses going forward should work with smaller ports for same AOV, so 114 degree AOV likely 200mm v. 230mm for D800 and 170mm for M43.
Alex_Tattersall 90 Posted January 11, 2014 I have an A7 housing, I will take a few photos of this tomorrow alongside a D7100 and an EM1 housings so you can see the size difference.
tdphoto 4 Posted January 12, 2014 There are already details for the planned lightning trigger? It would be great if this would work with Sony TTL! For over water there are now several manufacturers, the Sony flashes with TTL produce. For example, Metz and Sigma.
Edward Lai 36 Posted January 13, 2014 We got some time after the New Year for testing the A7 camera briefly in Cebu with the 28-70mm lens, and would like to share some photos here. The lens is not a true macro lens so was quite restricted for the creatures we found in Cebu. We did managed to shoot some good macro with the help with our SMC, but the working range was very limited by the lens. The entire gallery is here: http://nauticam.smugmug.com/HousingTests/NA-A7/35983271_G374FG Thank you for watching!

spencerjb22 4 Posted January 15, 2014 Yes, the 800's bigger but not massively.Less so once you've added the arms/strobes.
Scuba_SI 39 Posted January 16, 2014 Looks like my camera room! They aren't as small as i thought (A7 / EM-1). Can you do it again with an EM-5 in there too? Having a proper shutter lever for me is the big selling point. It was always horrible to go from an SLR style shutter release to one in the other orientation on my EM-5. Yes, I know, i'm being a big baby. A request regarding size differences between housings, from left the Nauticam NA-EM1 housing (Olympus OM-D EM-1) Sony A7/A7r housing and the Nikon D-800 housing.
