E_viking 30 Posted October 21, 2013 Has anyone experience with the Retra LSD Prime and the older Version of the INON Z240 ( lightbulb Pilot light). My Z240 have are the lightbulb version and not the LED. I am wondering if the Pilot light will be strong enough. /ERik
Gudge 59 Posted October 21, 2013 (edited) Based on my experience with the Retra LSD Pro and Type 2 Inon Z240 the aiming light is just not strong enough unless you are in dark shadow or on a night dive. I sent one of my Type 2 Z240s back to Inon for an upgrade as the flash tubes were very black and down on power. With this upgrade they keep the original body and replace all the internals from the latest Type 4 Z240 and you end up with the much brighter LED aiming light. The upgrade is much cheaper than getting a new Z240. I can now use the Retra Pro with the upgraded Inon Z240 in daylight. E_viking 30 Posted October 22, 2013 Sounds a bit like I assumed. The older Lightbulbs ( Type 2) are unfortunately not as strong as the LED Version. Just a question. Do you have the INON "Adapter" for the Retra LSD Pro? If so, did it help? The one that is somehow at an angle.
Gudge 59 Posted October 22, 2013 I think Retra's web site was a little out of date when I ordered my Retra Pro. At that time the angled adapter was offered as an optional extra and I ordered mine without it. When I received it, it was fitted with the angled adapter. The angled adapter is good in that it allows you to align the LSD so that the aiming light in the strobe is shining on the centre of the light collector in the LSD. This ensures that the beam from the aiming light is a bright as possible and accurately shows where the beam from the flash will fall. The only downside I found was that because the angled adapter is clear to allow you to align the strobe's aiming light on the light collector, it does allow some light from the strobe to escape. Depending on strobe position this can allow escaping strobe light to light the background of your shot. For example: Although it can work to your advantage as shown in these two shots, in general it doesn't. However it is easy to fix the strobe side leakage problem. Once I had determined the optimum position for the LSD on the strobe I put an alignment mark on the LSD and the strobe and covered the clear adapter with duct tape.
E_viking 30 Posted October 23, 2013 Thanks for the Infos. It clearly seems that it will not really work with the Pilot ( aiming) light without the LED upgrade. /Erik
