Cleaning my CCD

Recommended Posts

I also use the pbase/PecPad approach, but use the instructions provided by Fuji for opening and closing the shutter on my S2. No dust bunnies noticeable on any photos so far. I clean the sensor every other week.

I read a similar article on cleaning my Fuji S2 Pro using methanol and Pec Pads.

Who makes Pec Pads and where can you buy them ?

Ecclipse fluid and sensor swabs seems most popular, at least in canon circles. Don't know about Nikon, it may of course melt your CCD.

I just use the "Jumbo Blower Brush". It's what the local WA pro shop recommend, they seemed scared when I asked to buy ecclipse and told me not to do it - so I've sort of wimped out myself.

I wouldn't think you'd see much dust on U/W photos? I only see it on light colored skies at small apertures.

Marc,

Check out this link for sources of PecPads. Scroll down the page and you'll see some blue hyperlinks for various countries that have dealers.

I got mine from a company in Vallejo, California. I think for $8/pack, which holds 50 or so sheets.

I have both the D70 and the S2 and have cleaned both with the pecpads and methanol. I did have to trim my Walmart spatula about 1mm more with sharp scissors but both are just as easy to clean. Just make sure you have a full battery in the D70 if you don't have the optional AC adapter. With the S2 I always used the AC adapter. Once you have done it once it just takes a matter of seconds to do it. I clean it before I go on a trip and leave the methanol at home because of the volatility of it and I don't want it confiscated by the airport people.
