How to get my stuff to POM?

Recommended Posts

I will be traveling to Port Moresby from Cairns in the new year. With dive and camera gear I am going to be overweight for sure so I am trying to figure out what is the least likely to break the bank.

On Qantas I get 30kg check in then $52 per 5kg and 7kg carry on. For Air Nuigini it is really vague but have found a note that states scuba divers get 20kg + 15kg extra but there is no info on what excess luggage costs and cabin luggage is only 5kg. Airlines PNG and Virgin Australia don't seem to be options.

Has anybody done this recently? Would appreciate any info or advice

Thanks, Andre

Fly Qantas and prepay for the extra baggage.

Yes thanks but as mentioned that sets you back $52 for every 5kg overweight ( maybe this is new? ) so I am estimating about $300 overweight charges each way. So just seeing if there is some alternative. Has anybody got any recent experience with Air Nuigini ? Also wondering if carry on limits are strictly enforced out of Cairns?

If you have connecting flights, fly Qantas/air nuiguni code share and avoid virgin or png air. That way when one flight is inevitably lost/delayed, you're their problem to re-seat.

Air Niugini gives you more allowance if you join their "destinations" club, which is free. I found them to be lax on hand luggage - I carried on two bags with dSLR housing and camera in one and four strobes in another. Total hand luggage weight just under 30kgs, no one checked anything.

That's great advice - thanks Liz! I am just wondering if they will give me the scuba divers AND Destinations extra allowances??
