diggy 57 Posted December 11, 2013 Hi, Has anyone had a chance to use the newly launched Super Macro Converter Lens on a cropped CMOS sensor camera such as a 7D ? http://www.nauticam.com/product.asp?id=287 The website only talks about results with a FF sensor...as below: Stunning MagnificationWhen combined with a full frame camera and a 100mm or 105mm macro lens, the device converts the optical system to provide a maximum of 2.3X magnification factor. In other words, a subject area of 15.6mm X 10.4mm will fill the whole frame of a 36mm X 24mm sensor. Thanks for any info on this Diggy
Alex_Mustard 0 Posted December 11, 2013 Yes, I have. I have used it on both Full Frame (my Nikon D4) and on cropped (my Nikon D7100). Here are some shots (including showing the addition of the Multiplier): And comparison with the Subsee +5 on the D7100. Be aware that this a very powerful lens, especially with the crop factor of the camera - and you will find far more subjects suited to less powerful (but still very powerful dioptres) like the Subsee +5 and +10. I am planning a more detailed write up on this lens when I have time. Alex
Scuba_SI 39 Posted December 11, 2013 I also did a few tests: In this first one the video camera is a similar crop to a 7D.http://vimeo.com/81576918 The images in this comparison were on a 5Dmk3 with a 1.4 so you can get a similar crop on your 7D: http://nad-lembeh.com/blog/diving-stories/2507/epic-battle-2-smc-vs-mpe-65.html Tomorrow i'm hoping to get the TC on the crop for crazy macro
diggy 57 Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Thanks Alex and Scuba Si. I am relieved now. Alex i do have stackable +3 and +5 Wet Diopters with an o ring between the two to get a vacuum and more enlargement, BUT looking at this new SMC was tempted. I may jump in and get one. Thanks again guys. Look forward to your writeup Alex. Though i wonder why Nauticam does not put these details on their website. Glasseye Snapper 68 Posted December 13, 2013 ... Though i wonder why Nauticam does not put these details on their website. When it comes to the impact on magnification by the new diopters it doesn't matter if it is full frame or crop. So if the combination with 100mm macro gives a 2.3x magnification factor the same will apply on the 7D. The 7d does give you the extra 1.6x "crop magnification" or "1.6x loss of field-of-view", depending on how you look at it. Bart
Gilbubblefish 2 Posted December 13, 2013 seems promissing,...but if more powerfull than the subsee + 10, might not be able to use it with 150 sigma...what i'm currious about is it say on the Nauticam web site than you can use it with the 60 AFS ? do you think it can give good result ? escape 84 Posted December 13, 2013 (edited) Sigma 150mm will work well with it since MFD is longer then 100(105)mm lens, I guess. I'm thinking about get sigma 180mm after testing SMC w/ multiplier in lembeh. 60mm will work but working distance will shorter then 100(105)mm lens. FYI. Simple magnification comparison between Nauticam SMC vs SubSee +10 & +5. http://ejlabs.net/nauticam-smc-vs-subsee/ Edited December 13, 2013 by escape

Tim S 0 Posted December 15, 2013 Hi Does any one know whether the SMC can be used on the new Reefnet (Subsee) adaptor for Subal port? Thanks!
haagendazs 0 Posted December 16, 2013 Just wonder if this SMC is compatible with any of Canon Powershot G or S serial point-and-shoot camera?
adamhanlon 0 Posted December 16, 2013 Let's lay this to rest before we have an entire thread about SMC compatibility! The SMC will work with pretty well any camera, as long as the housing has a 67mm thread to fit it to. Subsee diopters have a 67mm thread too, so the SMC will work with the Subsee (and any other) adapter or port with this this thread size. In the case of compact cameras, it is a conversion lens, so the results will depend somewhat on the lens that is fitted to the camera. You may also need to zoom the lens in to eliminate vignetting. It will work however. Adam
Glasseye Snapper 68 Posted December 17, 2013 Do diopters actually work well for compacts? Many can already focus to very short distance, as short as 1cm from the G16 apparently. With their small sensors they also use correspondingly short physical focal lengths to achieve desired "equivalent" focal lengths, which normally means diopters are not very effective. Bart
adamhanlon 0 Posted December 17, 2013 The SMC is not really a diopter. Technically it is a conversion lens, and has its own magnification properties. This is also true of the Subsee to my knowledge. Adam
Tim S 0 Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) The SMC do NOT fit the new Subsee adaptor for Subal port - I just tried it out today. The new Subsee adaptor use a clamp with o-ring mechanism instead of screw threads, so there's no way to screw in the SMC. And because the SMC do not have a straight cylindrical shape at the receptacle end, it cannot be secured by the clamp mechanism of the Subsee adaptor. It simply doesn't stay in. I'm trying to find out more from Nauticam HK about this issue, will come back if there's any update. Edited December 20, 2013 by Tim S
diggy 57 Posted December 21, 2013 OK Taken the plunge and purchased the SMC, although i am told its not shipping yet. Thanks all for the input. Once i receive this and get to use it will post some results. Cheers

Once i receive this and get to use it will post some results. Cheers Maybe a bit of good news. They are shipping. I picked mine up from Reef Photo on Dec 19th. Unfortunately, all I can do is hold it and look at it, as I've sold my rig and am waiting for the new EM1 housing to come in. But it does look nice. bvanant 195 Posted December 24, 2013 Will the multiplier actually be a product? I see no mention of it anywhere. Could be a rival for the Canon 65 Bill
adamhanlon 0 Posted December 25, 2013 My understanding is that the Multiplier is currently a work in progress. Those that are out there are prototypes. As soon as they are truly available, it will be on the Wetpixel front page Adam
Nick Hope 151 Posted October 15, 2014 ... The SMC will work with pretty well any camera, as long as the housing has a 67mm thread to fit it to. Subsee diopters have a 67mm thread too, so the SMC will work with the Subsee (and any other) adapter or port with this this thread size. ... I was looking into the possibility of a dual flip holder for the SMC so I could have something like a Subsee +5 in the 2nd flip. The Saga Dive Dual Flip Lens Holder 67mm seemed to fit the bill but I notice near that the bottom of this page they say that the SMC is not compatible with any flip adapters from Saga or Reefnet. So there's obviously more to it than just having a 67mm thread. If anyone is aware of a dual flip adapter that will hold the SMC and one other filter/diopter, please let me know! Alex_Tattersall 90 Posted October 15, 2014 The new Saga holders fit the SMC with the SMC adapter it comes with. The only problem I found was the unused diopter getting in the way of the strobe but apart from that, fliptastic

waso 0 Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) Wauwwww. this is great stuff Simon! As far as I see, the images are not really comparable, because the're shot with completely different apertures (F16 vs.F36) In my experience there's a huge difference in diffraction. Was it done for a certain reason? Edited March 12, 2015 by waso
Aquapaul 26 Posted March 13, 2015 I used the SMC with my ReefNut flip. The trouble is that the SMC is a little smaller and won't clamp in the ReefNut clamp, I took a thick rubber band and put this around the threads then slid the SMC in the ReefNut clamp and clamped it down. I know sounds like $400 about to be lost but it really did clamp in very tightly and couldn't remove it without breaking the clamp.
