tubino 1 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) I admired a traveler who used a very sturdy box to transport video camera, housing, fins, wetsuit, etc. Apparently it is called a Balikbayan box, but I can't find a seller in the US. These folks in the Phillippines produce both a wheeled box, and a cover with handles that can be used on a 20" x 20" x 20" box: http://www.lugmaxbags.com/travelbags.html The wheeled box is especially cool, with corrugated plastic instead of cardboard. I'm sure I'm not the only one who might have some moist gear on the return trip... Does anyone know where to get such items? Double-wall corrugated boxes in the right size is of course easy:http://www.pkging.com/Doublewall-Boxes-20-20-20-275 Check this out: Edited February 11, 2014 by tubino
Stewart L. Sy 12 Posted February 11, 2014 Balikbayan or in English, Returning Resident Boxes are used by Filipinos who wish to maximize their luggage allowance by not having to use pricey and heavy suitcases to bring home gifts to family and friends back home as they'll be flying home empty handed anyway =). However, the current dimension of the boxes makes it very easy to overstuff given the 50lb weight limit imposed by most carriers. I've had the most luck buying the wheeled plastic luggage sets from Costco then buying 2 of the cheapo pillows at Ikea. I lay 1 pillow down, put housing, strobes, ports, arms, lights and what not on it, cover with the 2nd pillow and lash down with the straps the come with the bag. Best of all, you'll have pillows that more often than not, are more comfortable than those found in most resorts. This is based on over 15 years of back and forth travel to Asia from Vancouver. ;-) S.
troporobo 251 Posted February 12, 2014 You might try contacting LBC Express, its a Philippines courier company that specializes in sending balikbayan boxes. I use them all the time as the cost for a box from the US to Manila is quite reasonable as long as you're not in a hurry. Not sure if they have an outlet near you but they are in many places in the US and might be worth a try: http://www.lbcexpress.com/
