nortoda1 13 Posted February 21, 2014 A few months back Ive jumped from a D300 to D800. Now I have video capability!!! The majority of the time I will just shoot stills, but I would like to do a bit of video. LEDs seem to be getting more and more powerful, and cheaper in parallel. Just saw the Mangrove VC-4L6X, 6750 lumens, 85 CRI at a price of 850 dollars, sounds good. What lights are people using? Most interested in shoting wideangle (Sigma 15mm FE). Also shooting wrecks at depth 60-70m reagion.
thetrickster 328 Posted February 21, 2014 If you are after high quality video lights - look at: Keldan Luna 8 CRIs CRI: 95 Lumens: 5000lm Temp: 5000K Angle: 90' But not cheap - but you are already in Switerland!!!! Where they are made! The thing with lumens - is how they are rated and are typically rated at source. The Mangroves (I looked at the twin VS-12L12 18,000lm set previously) is that the lm measurement is across 130' - now that is great for UWA video - as one light might cover all your FoV - but 6700 lm across 130' - ends up not being very much light - not much 'punch'. Others will follow with more advice I'm sure. I decided to go with high quality light (high CRI) and lower power - as I can always add additional lights - if needed - but still retain the 'quality'
ChrigelKarrer 52 Posted February 21, 2014 I have also a D800 and use sometimes a pair of Mangrove 4320 Lumen lights and they ar sturdy and work well far to about 50 centimeters under daylight conditions at 10 Meters in clear water, but the illuminate greatly in caves or during night dives. Their new 8000 lumen lights should be a bit more powerful but i fear it will be still not ehough for daylight conditions to get nice colors between halfe and one meter. We have also 2 Hartenberger HID lights, they are way more bulky and give a bit stronger light as they have a bit more narrow beam. For shooting wide angle with the 15mm FE you need at least 3 lights to avoid light falloff on the sides and they most probably wont be enough powerful to iluminate a wreck at 70-80 meters at day.
