Dear Friends,

I like to hear your opinion about what is currently the best choice for a mid-level professional U/W video camera & housing set-up.

i.e. i'm NOT looking for a Red Epic, but something in the range of the former Sony PD170, V1 or EX3.

After my dissapointing experiences with the Sony NX5 I'm looking for a new kit.

I suspect this will get a lot of different opions... but I like to hear what your experiences are.

Regards,

Evert

What sort of budget do you have to spend?

Although if you're looking at an EX1/3 replacement then probably the PMW200 in Gates housing...

Maybe not as high end as you are looking for but a popular choice is the Canon G30 in a Gates housing. For those who like to shoot in a more manual mode you can take more control over it. You can add a diopter to it and you can get good results. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/963130-REG/canon_8454b001_vixia_hfg30_hd_camcorder.html

Some vacation video taken by my better half all just shot with everything in "Auto": http://vimeo.com/56833156

Have you thought about a dslr? They certainly have some disadvantages....which have been discussed many times before. But as far as quality is concerned...in my opinion there isn't much that can match the quality of picture with the exception of the RED. Another consideration would be bmcc. Not a lot out yet about underwater use...but still something to consider.

At this point, keep an eye on the Panasonic GH4. Even if you're not ready for 4K, its 1080 spec is the best among all the camera out there for now. Head over to EOSHD.com as they do extensive review of camera, compare to 5DM3 RAW, BCMM. They don't do comparison with the RED as that's not their price point.
