Cp 29 Posted June 2, 2014 (edited) Thanks Chris, What lenses were you using with filters? As to frame rates. Wasn't it proved that recording at 60fps and slowing down in FCPX or Premier actually produced a much shaper image than using the VFR features.. (Using optical flow blending). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Both 8mm and 7-14. Proved? How can someone "prove" that? Maybe one person's opinion. But optical flow and the like (twixtor) generate false data, i.e. they make up data they don't have. They do a nice job, sometimes, and I used optical flow in a few of the clips in this video. I thought the 96p VFR was really good; 60p VFR is possible a little better but I personally would rather go shoot that measure pixels like that. Cheers, Chris even if you shoot at 96 fps what is your final output format? What can play 96 or even 48 fps properly? It records at 96fps but plays back at 24 or 30, for a 400% or 320% slowdown. It even plays it back like this on the LCD, so you get the slow motion when you review it. Cheers, Cp Edit: Interesting how the forum merges two replies like that, even though I entered them separately. Edited June 2, 2014 by Cp
Pete L 48 Posted June 2, 2014 Thanks for your response Chris, I'll try out my palm & also the sharks belly. Another thing I like about the GH4 is the fact that you can have 4 custom WB settings so I can have one set for the surface cage & another for the bottom cage & maybe an in between also. Cheers Pete. thetrickster 328 Posted June 3, 2014 Both 8mm and 7-14. You retro fitted the filter holder from the 8 to the 7-14mm and using magic filters? Proved? How can someone "prove" that? Maybe one person's opinion. I agree its just an opinion. There has been some quite in-depth testing over on Personal-View forums of the 96fps feature and it vs 60fps slowed down. Thanks for all the replies Chris. Got any more sharky GH4 videos to share? :-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cp 29 Posted June 3, 2014 You retro fitted the filter holder from the 8 to the 7-14mm and using magic filters? Nope, just used scotch tape. Didn't use magic filters... I used a combination of some old school wratten filters. I agree its just an opinion. There has been some quite in-depth testing over on Personal-View forums of the 96fps feature and it vs 60fps slowed down. Thanks for all the replies Chris. Got any more sharky GH4 videos to share? :-) Sometimes people do this sort of testing and it becomes gospel on the internet. And sometimes they are right and sometimes wrong. There are lots of examples of where someone said something on the net and people just run with it. Internet crowd-think. Or non-think. I bump into people who shoot Canon at ISO 160 or 320 thinking that is the "native ISO" because of a test that someone posted a couple years showing sensor noise with with the lens cap on. I used to try to explain how that test is wrong and what they are actually doing is needlessly cutting their dynamic range by 1/3 stop. I've generally given up on that and just kind of nod my head. Next time I want to shoot with my lens cap on, though, it'll be at ISO 160... No more to share today, but I need to finish my video from Anilao that I shot with 1DC. Probably won't be this week as we have both the Cine Gear show and the Long Beach Scuba show this weekend. Cheers, Cp
recd 7 Posted June 4, 2014 I saw drawings of the GH4 housing yesterday. And that's all I can say about that Cheers, Chris Chris Are you able to elaborate on your comment yet? Can I infer that more than a change to the setting/lock dial is planned?
thetrickster 328 Posted June 4, 2014 Integrated Handles, Vacuum Check, horizontal shutter release, new style port and housing locking. Look at the A7R housing and move the buttons around to match the NA-GH3... This is what I've been told Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nick Hope 151 Posted June 4, 2014 And a glass port (that may be 180mm)
ScubaBob 37 Posted June 4, 2014 Do you all know if the new housing will still be compatible with the old style M43 ports (e.g. 12-50mm Macro)?
Pete L 48 Posted June 4, 2014 Larger buttons would be nice too, mainly the instant focus & PLEASE GIVE US MANUAL FOCUS!!!!
Nick Hope 151 Posted June 5, 2014 Larger buttons would be nice too, mainly the instant focus & PLEASE GIVE US MANUAL FOCUS!!!! Are you talking about the 12-50? I've kind of only just clocked that there doesn't seem to be a focus gear for that, which is a serious drawback (there is for the 60mm macro port). What focussing methods did you try Pete? Release date? I got a little info from Phoebe Lu last week. (Mods - may be worth merging and renaming these 2 (or even 3) GH4 threads?)
Pete L 48 Posted June 5, 2014 Yeah Nick, no manual focus on the 12-50 or the 7-14. I just used auto focus & then switched in to manual focus to lock it & stop it from hunting. There is a switch on the back of the GH4 to flick between manual & auto focus. Focus peaking only works in manual focus too. I would kill to have manual focus for both of these lenses. I hope as the Gh4 becomes more popular then there will be manual focus options available to us. It is really my only serious complaint so far.
edmond320 26 Posted June 5, 2014 Hi Pete, Manual focus ??? I have the new Nauticam 6" dome port (for 7-14) , with manual focus knob, a few months ago already.
edmond320 26 Posted June 5, 2014 The new 6" dome port is now have a manual focus knob.
Pete L 48 Posted June 5, 2014 Oh what!!!! I didn't know that existed! When did that come out Edmond? I am going to wait until the 8inch glass dome is available & if that has manual focus I will go for that, otherwise I will get this one then.
Pete L 48 Posted June 5, 2014 Funnily enough that manual focus port is not advertised on either Reef Photo/Backscatter or Nauticams websites. Atleast nothing came up when searching for 7-14mm ports on any of those sites. Might be time for some updates to websites as I am a little annoyed now that I find this is available but no-one has it advertised!
Nick Hope 151 Posted June 5, 2014 Maybe you have to choose between focus or zoom on that port? Seriously, how important is manual focus for the 7-14mm? I imagine it being far less important than for the macro lenses. But maybe that's because I'm coming from a small-sensor camcorder background.

I imagine it being far less important than for the macro lenses. But maybe that's because I'm coming from a small-sensor camcorder background. The issue of autofocus with the 4:3 cameras is that is is slow and sloppy however considering that the 7-14 has a minimum aperture of f/4 and the camera a 2x crop factor you can focus the camera on land at 3 feet, lock focus, jump in the water and you should have all in focus from 1.5 feet to infinity. If instead you are shooting something closer or you zoom you have a problem and you need the camera to focus this is where manual focus is useful as autofocus as mentioned before is .....not that good
Cp 29 Posted June 8, 2014 Hi All, We showed the prototype NA-GH4 housing at the Cine Gear Expo in Hollywood yesterday. I'll have it at the Scuba Show in Long Beach today for my presentation. If you are in the area and want to check it out, the presentation is at 2pm at the Seaside 5-A room, and I should be around either before or after, showing it to each of the 5 Nauticam dealers at the show. Hope to see you there. Chris

Cp 29 Posted June 9, 2014 But a photo would be nice... Regards Peter Any photos for us Chris? Sorry, only snapped a couple of iPhone pics at the hotel, teaser sort of shots, nothing showing substantial detail. We'll be working on a press release for this soon, complete with lots of photos. I'm going to take it to the Digital Shootout so hopefully can post some more video/stills from it next week, and maybe some photos of it being used. Cheers, Chris
escape 84 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) I can see M14 hole on the back, so M16 and M14 x 1 each? Edited June 10, 2014 by escape
CheungyDiver 53 Posted June 10, 2014 Hi CP Is the M14 bulkhead for the vacuum system? I believe the M16 bulkhead hole is for the HDMi external recorder housing - hopefully for Shogun. Soon may be? regards David
