Viewing RAW images with IOS 8

Recommended Posts

Hi

I use my iPad on holiday to save and review my photos. I made the mistake of updating my iPad from IOS 7 to IOS 8, and now trying to scroll through my uploaded RAW images is so slow, it is painful, and pretty much useless.

What are others doing to get some level of usability out of iPads with IOS 8 when reviewing RAW images?

Thanks

We have also had this problem. We used the iPad on our recent trip to Fiji and to be honest it was unusable for viewing never mind deleting or editing images.

Roddy installed Cool Iris which allowed us to view them ok but it can not do any more than that.

It also looks like we have lost images from the iPad, it appears that the iPad has dumped the RAW files if they have been accessed in anyway. The images that Roddy had looked at with a program called photogene appear to have autosaved as jpg and dumped the RAW files.

He is not amused. Sorry we haven't been able to help but we share your pain. Also be careful which work-a-round you use - you may end up regretting it.

I have Photogene on my iPad mini 1st generation with iOS 8.1. I have no issue with speed, I found it decent for a "2 years old device".

I use first the Apple photo app to import the pictures to the iPad. On the photo app you only see the JPEG pictures but it import both JPEG and RAW. Make sure you have enough space on your iPad.

From my experience the original pictures are not deleted or removed from the SD card.

I then use the Photogene app to edit the pictures. It seems that Photogene open the RAW, because it says "decoding RAW...". Photogene doesn't alter the original raw file, it create a "layer" with the adjustments you have made, you can comeback to the original image anytime you want. You can then export the image in many different way.

Once connect to my Mac. I use the iPhoto transfer the photo I have adjusted and exported. BUT iPhoto doesn't transfer the RAW to my Mac because it cannot read it.

In general I found not to be limited by the speed but by the IPad memory available as the Apple photo app doesn't let you the option to import the JPEG only. I'll be happy to only copy the JPEG especially when I'm traveling where I just need to visualize what I have shot.

In addition, copying JPEG + RAW can be quite long when you have a full 32GB SD card.

In my opinion The iPad is a very nice tool to review your photos on trip without the need of a computer.

I have to try other IOS photo app like Photoshop.

I'll be glad to hear more form others.

I should have add that the iPad is definitively not a device to be use to save or backup your RAW files, once on the IPad you cannot send it back to your computer, at least I have not found the way to do it.

I think that the best option for this application is a Surface Pro 3 or a Macbook Air but as i am a PC guy i prefer the Surface Pro.
A few days ago i played in a shop with the Intel I7 Surface Pro and this small little beast was lightning fast!

I think that the Surface Pro 3 is fast enough for editing and viewing pictures while underway and it's size and weight makes it a perfect travel buddy.

Thanks for the replies guys. I went to the local Apple shop, and the 'Genius', was saying that unless Apple issue an update to return the RAW functionality, then for the time being anybody with IOS 8 is screwed....

Atobit. Getting the RAWs back off the iPad is easy if you are using a Mac. You just use Image Preview to import them into a folder. Not sure what the deal is with a PC.

Cheers
