4K media players

Recommended Posts

I might post this in a specialized forum anyway today I went and got myself a Sony 4K Tv which is great however when I looked for a 4K media player to possibly play any 4K video I produce I found nothing that could output 4K only decode with 1080p scaling

I then looked at this http://www.xtreamer.net/Prodigy-4K/but is not available until February

Connecting a laptop to watch a clip or an SDXC card on the tv seems a bit retro anyone has got any other options?

Surely it's a smart TV so is wifi connected?

My friend has a LG and is watching 4K YouTube and Netflix?? (Or something) on his.

Don't Sony provide a free library of 4K movies? (I think Panasonic do?) on the TV itself?

I really want a 4K TV or Monitor. Lucky you! :)

The Tv has got VDO applications so netflix works and so does youtube however for my OWN videos I have not got a way to play them which seems a bit strange?

Am not planning to shoot clips and upload them to youtube in order to watch them

You can plug in a USB drive with a 4k mov file?

Yes I gather that but I was hoping in something a bit more sophisticated with a proper clip library as I have now

I guess we will have to wait for the next generation android box that can handle that resolution

Xbmc/Kodi now support h265 and all 4K codecs so it can be used to stream. However am not clear where is the decoding done and what performance is required. Will has to do some tests

What about Open Hour Chameleon?

Is that not based on xbmc?

My first tests are depressing steaming my 1080p files 15 MBps results in massive stuttering on a panasonic set

Am picking up the sony on Sunday but I am a bit concerned about steaming 4K files on the LAN despite an AC1900 router that is super fast in wifi

Personally I am using this one and it plays my GH4 UHD clips from SD card flawlessly, I could also play my GH4 UHD files in my NAS through SAMBA, no stuttering.

I have seen some of those boxes but deep in the specs it says that 4k is decoded but downscaled to 1080p that's what I was referring at the beginning. Seems like the output through hdmi is only 1080p
