bankam 0 Posted January 13, 2015 Looking for a macro lense for my D7100, in an Ikelite housing. Have an older Tokina 100mm but find it not very sharp. Looking at the Nikon 105mm not sure which version VR or not vs the Tokina Pro any thoughts? Also do users see a big difference between the glass vs plastic lense ports for the macro lenses? JimSwims 31 Posted January 13, 2015 Which sort of macro imaging do you want to do most? Don't forget to have a look at the 60mm option too. If you are shooting larger subjects/backing off more, then images will be softer with the 100mm as more water in between. Glass or Plastic port, for macro really no difference. 100mm best option for small-tiny subjects and super macro work. 60mm great for larger subjets and temperate/murkier waters. jcclink 8 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Another feature of the 105 VR is the AF/M lens setting. Auto focus with manual over ride. No special port, nothing to reset on camera to go from auto to manual focus. Just need the focus gear. 1/2 press shuttle release, barely move the focus control on the housing & you have manual focus (as long as the release remains at 1/2). The VR lens has much faster AF than the old version. I agree that the VR does very little u/w. You will end up with both the 60 & 105. jcclink 8 Posted January 13, 2015 You are correct. My reply was based on my shooting technique (or lack there of) of holding shutter release 1/2 way while trying to AF. When that fails I go to MF but keep holding the release - force of habit. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Aquapaul 26 Posted January 13, 2015 I use to like the 105VR better but my 60 is a bit sharper and with all those pixels I can crop to something tighter. I found with my D7100 that most of my lenses benefited with some auto focus fine tune. My 105 is at +15 and my 60 is at +5. Doesn't sound like much but it made a world of difference.
