oskar 6 Posted February 20, 2015 What do you think about this new iteration? For me more is required before a full upgrade with new housing. However, how effective is the stabilization improvement for wide angle still-life? It should be effective, but I'm not sure if the dome and virtual image will trick the logics at least slightly and render the is at least not as effective as in air. What do you think? Interceptor121 704 Posted February 20, 2015 What kind of shots you think will use stabilisation? Only ambient light shots will have a benefit but with a sufficiently wide lens you won't see much even at 1/60?
Phil Rudin 423 Posted February 20, 2015 The answer to your question O is that you can expect about a one stop improvement over E-M1/E-M5. If this would be your only reason for moving from another OMD model chances are you would never notice the difference U/W and not likely see much difference in stills above water. Deep6 7 Posted February 21, 2015 Personally, I would not upgrade to the newer M5 for slightly better IS in u/w w/a. Has movement been a problem in the past? If, so, work on your holding & breathing techniques. Best of luck, Bob
Jock 14 Posted February 21, 2015 There is a rule of thumbs for focal length and shutter time: If you shoot with 50mm, use 1/50sec or faster, if you shoot 140mm, use 1/140sec or faster etc. This is WITHOUT I.S. With stabilisation you can use longer shutter times. You see, for wide angle like the Panasonic 7-14mm you can use relatively long shutter times and still get sharp pics. The advanced I.S. will be good if you shoot birds with a long lens like the Pana 100-300, but for u/w does not matter that much. Jock
droplet 1 Posted February 23, 2015 Probably I will upgrade to E-M5 Mark II from E-M5. The reason are: 1. Better EVF like in E-M1 2. Much better video mode in which I see advantage of new I.S.. I'm waiting for Nauticam propose of new housing. Olympus housing seems to be too high due to new flash. E-M1 with housing was too big for me and video mode was as poor as in E-M5. I do not see any reason to upgrade from E-M1 for someone who does not make video.
Interceptor121 704 Posted February 23, 2015 I would not loose my sleep on video I have seen the review on dpreview and the quality is the same of the EM-10. Olympus has issues with the codecs and implementation of H264 on their camera they just don't seem to have the technology
oskar 6 Posted February 23, 2015 I would not upgrade this time anyhow, but I do quite often push high ISO and very long shutter times so that's the reason of the interest. In saying that I disagree about wa lenses and IS, it does make a significant difference.
