Fish ID in Bonaire

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what kind of fish this is? I shot this in Bonaire. It appears to be a juvenile which makes identification a bit difficult for me. Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Hey Randall

Its a Sharpnose Pufferfish (Canthigaster rostrata).

You see lots of them on the reef in Bonaire. Cute little things who will often play hide and seek with dives, ducking around corals heads or sponges.

Although hard to gauge the size from your photo, I'd say it's about full grown. They are usually quite small

Thank you very much Tim! I am updating my website, and I want it to be accurate. Since I am not a biologist, I really appreciate your help with this. Thanks again.

My pleasure.

I hope you enjoyed Bonaire. I was there in late January for 3 weeks and got some cracking shots. I always saw it as a macro environment but this time spent some time with a 15mmFE as well and got some shots I was delighted with - and, almost better, they are selling!
