GH4 vs RX100 mk IV for 4k video

Recommended Posts

Looking at the test results of the RX100 mk IV, (DXO, Dpreview) the tiny 1" sensor system seems really impressive, the iso-performance

matches the m43 sensor while in video the sony is clearly superior.

Is there any aspect where the GH4 worth ~2x the investment? Alright, I won't be able to shoot 10+min 4k with the RX, because it overheats.

Also I won't be able to use a true fisheye, I have to live with the ~120° provided by the WWL-1. Anything apart from that?

RX100 IV cannot set manual WB in movie mode and no AF-S in movie mode.

GH4 has 10bit 422 HDMI output but I doubt its ability to MWB underwater with ambient light.

Thanks for both feedbacks! I don't see any points being a show stopper for me, I don't plan macro beyond the capabilities of my ucl-165, I am mostly wide angle oriented.

I don't plan an HDMI-recorder either. MWB might be an issue, I plan to use my gel filters here.

The LX100 is a mini GH4, it has excellent MWB, perform slightly better than the RX100 M4 in term of macro, and is cheaper. If wide angle is your thing, then just get the short port and the WWL-1 then you're all set. With the WWL-1, you get around 120/130 degree, remove the WWL-1 at 24mm, you get around 70 degree FOV, and when switch the camera to macro mode at 24mm, you can focus up to 5cm. These 3 technique in the flat port itself is very useful.

What is the usable zoom range on the LX100 with th eshort port and the WWL-1 adapter? Do you get any field of view options between 120/130 degrees and 70 degrees?

And how does that compare with the Sony RX100IV with the WWL-1 adapter?

My understanding is that the GH4 + 14-42mm PZ lens in a flat port with the WWL-1 adapter would allow you to zoom through the lens' entire range.

I can confirm however that the underwater white balance on the GH4 without red filters isn't great -- I often struggle with purple in the water column that should be blue. I suspect the RX100iv will have the same problem.

The LX100 with the short port allows you to zoom to 30mm, or 32mm, I never use zoom when using the short port. I'm don't have the WWL-1 you would just have to wait for Nauticam press release on the WWL-1 to see what kind of FOV you get. I was told LX100 white balance is slightly better than the GH4. How do you white balance with the GH4? Many people use it without problem, the RX100 M4 can't even white balance in video mode, so it's worse.

What about WB with filters?

However, they might be difficult to mount on the rx100+wwl-1 system (should be put somewhere between the housing and the wwl).

You could just cut a Magic Filter foil to fit inside the housing. On my last trip I used a URPRO filter with 67mm thread on the housing, then on top of that I fitted the INON UWL 100 lense with dome. Worked very well.

On white balance: Not an issue when using a filter.

The GH4 is definitely superior for macro work. The RX100 has too little zoom and requires strong diopters that are not easy to use. The Sony doesn't white balance but the picture profiles of he Mark IV are fabulous and you can use use auto white balance with a filter on without problems this is what I achieved with the rx100 Mark II with auto

I have not yet seen a Panasonic video that can beat it. The LX100 is ok for 4K but the port system is a pain and the zoom range equally poor. You can use the Mangrove deeproof push on filter on the Inon UWL-H100. For what concerns video the WWL-1 is not rectilinear so I am not planning to use it for video
