Rocha 0 Posted January 5, 2016 Here is an interesting new DX Nikon, the D500, looks like it will be a good one for underwater. http://nikonrumors.com/2016/01/05/nikon-d500-dslr-camera-officially-announced.aspx/ In a nutshell: same AF, metering and image processing as D5, smaller DX body. Rocha 0 Posted January 5, 2016 Some more detail (and many shots) of it here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/8529664044/here-at-last-nikon-announces-d500 Pretty sure it will require brand new housings, but it looks like a grat choice for underwater use. Nicool 26 Posted January 5, 2016 That reminds me so much of the venerable D300 announcement 8 years ago! I haven't been as excited by a camera announcement since then... Till today! What a great news, almost crying... Or am i hearing my bank account? Envoyé de mon iPhone en utilisant Tapatalk

sasdasdaf 2 Posted January 6, 2016 Bravo, Nikon! Finally, the camera that everyone has been waiting for for years. It will now be interesting to see how many people with D7000/7100/7200 upgrade to the D5 for underwater use.
howard 6 Posted January 6, 2016 Looks great... AF-ON, sub-selector and Fn buttons on the back will be a useful for uw photographers too...
howard 6 Posted January 6, 2016 Just noticed no pop-up flash. Probably not a problem for Nauticam, as they have the Flash Trigger which fits into the hotshoe. But other housing manufacturers may have an issue triggering strobes with fiber optics...?
Trevor Rees 1 Posted January 6, 2016 Apart from no pop up flash, the other thing that caught my eye is the ISO button having been moved to be near the shutter release (same as D5). I wonder if that makes a housing control for this button awkward to design for quick ISO adjustment? Perhaps some of the controls can be reassigned.
vbpress 4 Posted January 6, 2016 Great camera (on the paper). The most interesting points are the wide af sensor coverage (very very usefull!!), great iso performance and, probably, a good viewfinder (similar to the D2x series I suppose). No popup? No problem: old style cable but more compact housing design good for best packaging (have you seen the Sea&Sea MDX-D810? The tallest housing ever made for compact DSLR ) Now, who will be the first manufacturer to create an housing for this camera? I guess Nauticam, the faster housing maker on the market. "Bravo Nikon", but in Italy we say "Brava Nikon" becouse (I don't know why) we associate the female gender to all Camera Manufacturer.
adamhanlon 0 Posted January 6, 2016 A lot of people are commenting on the lack of pop up flash. Historically, Nikon tends not to put them on its pro level cameras, as most pros will tend to use an external flash gun (on land at least). I am sure that housing manufacturers will offer a number of work-arounds. Slave strobe triggers are one option of course, as are electronic connections. Nikon has published a technical digest for the new camera detailing some of the new features. It is a pdf download: http://chsvimg.nikon.com/lineup/microsite/d500/common/pdf/technology-digest.pdf Check out the focus point coverage (for macro shooting): I must confess that my only worry is the combination of XQD and SD cards. XQD is fast, but expensive and will need an additional card reader. Otherwise, I think this camera is going to produce some outstanding underwater images
adamhanlon 0 Posted January 7, 2016 Sony has responded to the new camera with a new range of XQD and SD cards along with and XQD/SD card reader. http://wetpixel.com/articles/sony-announces-pro-xqd-and-sd-cards-and-readers Adam

Erbster 0 Posted January 10, 2016 probably, a good viewfinder (similar to the D2x series I suppose). I can't see any info on this- I think this is an important factor in choosing an u/w camera body. The Nikon info talks about eye point, but I don't think that means the viewfinder size.
Rocha 0 Posted January 11, 2016 I can't see any info on this- I think this is an important factor in choosing an u/w camera body. The Nikon info talks about eye point, but I don't think that means the viewfinder size. Here is what I gathered from the web: D2x viewfinder: 19.9mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 0.86x. D4 viewfinder: 18mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 0.70x. D810 viewfinder: 17mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 0.70x. D610 viewfinder: 21mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 0.70x. D300s viewfinder: 19.5mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 0.94x. D500 viewfinder: 16mm eyepoint, coverage 100%, magnification 1.00x. The lower the eyepoint, the closer you have to put your eye to the viewfinder to see it fully. The way I see it, the D500 viewfinder will be very similar to the D300s (note that FX cameras have lower magnification, hence the 0.7x, vs close to 1.0 in DX): you will need to look 3mm closer than what you would in a D300s to get a 100% view, but you will get higher magnification, which is good (and is higher than the D2x too). As far as actual viewfinder size, a good photoshopper could probably make a side-by-side or overlay of the D500 with other cameras for us to compare. Any takers? Alex_Mustard 0 Posted January 11, 2016 I have used XQD cards since switching to the D4 (I have only ever owned two of them - one and a card reader came free with the camera) - and that camera is now at 200,000 clicks. Through USB3 they download super fast (especially because the camera is not that high resolution). I really like them and will spec my D5 as dual XQD. I think lack of pop-up flash on the D500 is probably about weatherproofing - as a major market for this camera will be nature photographers. Alex
divegypsy 22 Posted January 11, 2016 One thing to note on both of the new cameras, the D5 and D500, is that from the pictures I've seen, neither camera has a flash compensation button, only a general compensation control. This would make shooting TTL flash quite difficult if every time you wanted to change the TTL output of the flash you had to go thru various menus to do it. And in this case any change in the flash output made by using the general compendation would also affect the ambient light exposure if you are in any auto-exposure mode rather than manual mode. Increasingly, when I am shooting pictures that have both an ambient light component to the picture and a (fill) flash component, I am shooting in either shutter priority or aperture priority auto exposure and using the flash compensation to control the strength of the fill flash relative to the ambient light rendition of the background. It works so well that I joke with friends about having turned my D800 into a point & shoot camera. Shooting this way allows me to get more of the one-shot opportunities than ever before and get the shot when the ambient light is changing rapidly. How you would even be able to link an underwater strobe to the camera and shoot TTL may present new problems to the strobe makers since as far as I am aware, radio signals do not transmit well underwater. adamhanlon 0 Posted January 11, 2016 Hi Fred, They both have flash compensation buttons... With both cameras, it is on the Zoom out button the rear of the camera (really easy for housing manufacturers to access). If you are not in Playback mode, you will be able to adjust your TTL flash exposure if you wish, just as you can with your D800.. I am not sure why you would want to trigger your strobes wirelessly? I would just connect mine electrically or use a electro-optical converter on the camera's hot shoe... Adam
divegypsy 22 Posted January 12, 2016 Hi Adam, I didn't mean to suggest that I wanted to trigger my strobes wirelessly, only that I wanted an independent flash compensation control in addition to the general compensation. I'll have to re-examine the pictures I've seen of the D500 to look for this on the zoom out button. The flash comp control is one of my most used controls on my D800 housing. To the best of my knowledge, neither the Nikon D3, nor the D4, had this. The ability to have a "remote" strobe that can be triggered wirelessly, in addition to one or several strobes directly wired to my housing is something that I do use occasionally. For this need one of my old Ikelite TTL slave triggers works very nicely. Fred

Alex Alex, what are u going to do with the Subal D4 housing? fit / squeeze D5 into current housing? did you check with Subal Austria yet? Would be interesting to know...probably too early to come to a conclusion... regards Juerg
adamhanlon 0 Posted January 19, 2016 Hi Fred, The D2X/D3/D4/D4s do have flash compensation buttons: It is number 57 on the diagram! As does the D5: Button 4 down on the left hand side! The D500's is in the same position. The D500/D5/ will give the option of (with suitable strobes) giving TTL with flash output control, via that rear button. I am unsure what you are asking: How you would even be able to link an underwater strobe to the camera and shoot TTL may present new problems to the strobe makers since as far as I am aware, radio signals do not transmit well underwater. The D500 can trigger strobes electrically and via the many electro-optical converters that exist. Some of these do not work via TTL, so this may present a challenge given your shooting style. Your slave strobes, although they are wireless, are actually being triggered optically All the best Adam
