mfrymus 2 Posted March 24, 2016 Who has used the Canon 11-24mm underwater? I dont have a dslr at the moment, as Im deciding which full package would be best. Instead of using the 8-15mm fisheye, I thought about the 11-24 lens instead. I know it will be more money, but other than the cost, thoughts on this lens? Tom_Kline 143 Posted March 24, 2016 The lens has a very large diameter and thus may require a special port and port extension tubes for your housing adding more to the cost than just the lens. This may be one reason why we have not seen much published. It may be more useful for those shooting video when the video mode does not use the full size of the sensor. The 8-15 is much easier to adapt and works well under water.
haring 1 Posted March 25, 2016 It is great however it is going to cost a lot to create the rig. There are other cost considerations besides the lens.
charlesthecat 0 Posted March 31, 2016 Hi guys! I am in Singapore and have just asked the same questions. Nauticam is currently the only housing supporting the 11-24, housing + domeport roughly 6000 USD net. Ikelite is about to announce a new housing series with larger port within the next month, supporting the 11-24 as well. Might be a more affordable option. I am still not sure if I should wait and see or go with the Nauticam straight away (which in my opinion is the better option, if you can afford it), due to a tight budget at the moment... pachku 10 Posted March 31, 2016 I do wonder how you're computing that. Sea & Sea has a kit for the 11-24mm, http://www.divervision.com/seaandsea-port-and-zoom-gear-set-for-canon-ef-11-24mm-f4l-usm-30131.html, and so will others, shortly. Not sure if the 11-24mm worth the money, size and weight, though. The 8-15mm with a minidome should give you great IQ, and you can get as close to the subjects as they will allow you. charlesthecat 0 Posted March 31, 2016 Yeah just learned about the Sea&Sea as well. Would go for the nauticam or sea&sea set? Anyone experience with either one using the 11-24? You are absolutely right about the 2nd part as well, if you get a lens for UW primarily I wouldn't choose the 11-24 either.
tubestance 33 Posted April 4, 2016 The 11-24 is big, wide, heavy and pricey. Unless you have a reason to need that ultra wide (weitwinkel) field of view over the narrower 16mm field of view, the 16-35mm v2 might be the easiest option. Just an opinion
dovechoco 1 Posted November 13, 2016 I bought it last year in 2015 and used for my trip in Mexico. And for the 1st time, I enter a photography competition, I am surprised I can win something. I just started diving 3 years ago btw. http://www.uwphotographyguide.com/oa15-hm1-novicedslr It's very heavy and big not only on the lens. But also on the dome and the port. It's sharper for land photography compare to underwater. And the edges can look soft if you do not tilt it correctly in the underwater. Initially, I thought I would replace my fisheye with 11-24 but both lens have a different effect and performance. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1552051075091364&substory_index=0&id=1492372591059213 https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1540540059575799&substory_index=0&id=1492372591059213 I have included links of photos taken with EF 11-24. You will need to frame your composition carefully and then crop the soft edges out.
