Trying to make sense of nudibranch species classifications

Recommended Posts

I'm sure there is something that I am missing, but I am trying to tie morphology to the scientific naming and not having great luck. Some are ok, like Nembrotha species, until you find Tambja morosa that looks like it should be in that group. I've never taken a marine biology class, so there is probably something terribly basic and obvious that I need to learn...

One think I am sure of is that you are completely not alone!

The recent Gulen Nudibranch Safari (http://wetpixel.com/articles/report-gulen-nudibranch-safari) and what is quite clear is that taxonomy is going through some pretty big changes!

The advent of DNA analysis has produced some unexpected results, which in turn has forced a re examination of the taxa.

I don't know of an easy way to understand the changes. Perhaps this can be seen as part of the challenge?

That is a good way to look at it Adam...kind of like a puzzle.

Best to buy a good ID book; species are grouped according to taxonomy. However, with recent and continung changes, none are up to date. Always double check the names on WoRMS:

Cjames,
You need to do a bit of reading. A good ID book should have a general explanation of grouping and why and then you can delve deeper on the internet. For example both the genus you mentioned are in the larger group Nembrothinae.

If you do most of your diving in the Indo-Pacific then the best current guide is 'Nudibranch & Sea Slug Identification: Indo-Pacific'. Although some of the names have changed it is still a great guide with a detailed introduction to the subject.

Good luck
