What to buy? INON Z240 or wait for the new release? Rental?

Help!

I have a Sony A7RII setup with Nauticam macro and 16-35 mm setup. I am in need of lighting prior to an 11 day liveaboard Bali trip during the middle of August. 6 weeks...not very long!

I bought the Nauticam flash trigger used and need strobes and video lights.

I was heading towards INON Z240 but I dont like to buy the OLD model unless I know what the difference is in the NEW model.

Can I rent lighting for this trip? Is that a viable option?

What about traveling with cameras and lighting gear on Qatar airlines?

Opinions welcome.

Thanks, Robotten

Yeah, that's always a bit of a tough decision.

As I'm sure you have seen from the many posts about them, folks really like the Z240. You can't really go wrong with them. You could always buy Z240s and then if the new strobes are that much better, sell them and move on. They're always in demand. But you might find you are perfectly happy staying with them.

Retra is also an option :-)

The Z240s are workhorses. With a new strobe, be it Inon or Retra, you never know if there will be problems in the first productions. Sea&Sea seems to be infamous for that kind of trouble...

Of course you can travel with your gear on Qantas - the question is if they will let you take it into the cabin! :mocking: From what I have heard (! - never flew with them) they seem to be very strict with the weight of your carry-on bag.

I contacted Retra...they cant deliver in time for my trip. One USA supplier of INON Z240 is out of stock. I don't like making decisions based upon availability.

Please keep the suggestions coming!

Not much difference (if any) between the v2, v3, and v4 of the inons. I think they changed the aiming light from halogen to LED and that was about it. I spoke to the inon guy at Oztek and got the feeling there might be a few actual changes in the next version, but it was an incremental upgrade rather than a revolutionary one.

The inons are light to travel with, take AA batteries and produce a lot of light. Try not to use them repeatedly on full power in warm water and you'll be right for years. Have a good trip!

Thanks for the replies to this thread. I ended up tracking down a couple of NEW z240 units. They seem to keep their value and appear to be reliable compared with other available units. I did communicate with RETRA and they were not able to promise delivery prior to my trip. Now, I am looking for Video lights. Anyone have experience with Kraken?

Thanks, Robotten
