Dome and housing transportation with planes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would like to ask for good tips for the transport of my underwater camera stuff when travellin with plane.

The handluggage is to small and their would not be enoug free weight.

I ha a seacam Superdome with 24cm, a Compact port with 17cm, 2 seaflash 150d, a Dslr housing and so on.

Has somebody tips for a save transport of the dome in my suitcase?

What are good possibilities to protect my stuff?

Thanks in advance

Armin

Whenever I traveled, I stowed my camera, glasses and flashes with all the batteries in the handluggage, accepting the risc of overweight. I never had to remove weight from the handlugage, but planned to put all my objectives in the pockets of the anorak and to have the camara around the neck . Housing, ports and all other parts have been savely wraped with my neopren. Never had any problems in long hawl flights.

I used to carry my dome port in its original box in my hold luggage but after the box deteriorated I bought a plastic food container with a clip-on lid, it fits in quite snugly with a single layer of bubble wrap. My dome port is half the size of yours but maybe you could find something big enough to protect it in the same way. I always carry the housing & camera in my hand luggage as that fits in a 30l backpack with a little padding of clothes or bubble wrap and is only 5-6kg.

Hello: Over the years and many overseas air trips I have packed my housing, dome and ports, each wrapped separately in clothes or dive suit, in my suitcases. The housing with front and back halves locked together I wrap in my dive suit. My suitcases are light weight polycarbonate.

Thus far I have had no problems with the luggage nor with customs in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and the USA.

Cheers and best of luck!

I made a padded bag out of an old FedEx plastic envelope for my 230 dome and lined it with polystyrene. I then put that in a supermarket cool bag.

I carry it nonchalantly into the cabin along with my Pelican roller box and camera bag......

I have my housing and strobes in a roll on camera bag which I place in the overhead. This includes an Aquatica housing, 8 inch dome, macro port, a pair of Ike D-161's, arms and cables. The bag is a discontinued Akona, but there are similar bags on the market. I have checked this bag on return flights andd it usually gets a TSA inspection slip in the bag.

The camera and lenses go into a camera shoulder bag that stows under the seat. The Aquatica viewfinder also goes in the camera bag as I found out quickly that it is to fragile for checked luggage.
