bubffm 178 Posted September 15, 2017 (edited) Attached a few clips showing before and after color correction comparisons of a couple of 4k clips filmed in 4K 30p 10 bit and 4K 60p 8bit during our trip to Fiji. Color Correction was done with the Color Finale Plugin for FCPX. Only simple correction of color channels, plus exposure and saturation correction. A bit of hue fixing here and there to get the blue right, but no sophisticated grading. I may do something similar using Davinci Resolve 14 if I find the time Edited September 15, 2017 by bubffm

EvilOtter 41 Posted September 15, 2017 Impressive! Your graded footage really pops! I am also keen to try Resolve but I find the interface to be daunting. I simply don't have enough free time to sit around and play with it to get comfortable.
bubffm 178 Posted September 15, 2017 Ya, Davinci is a bit scary. I am just not very fluent with it, takes me 10 times as long to do this in Davinci which is why I prefer FCPX and Color Finale. Still, if it gets very tricky or if you want a super-duper grade, nothing beats Davinci.
thetrickster 328 Posted September 16, 2017 Nice Grade! What was the Depth my I ask? Regards - Richard
bubffm 178 Posted September 16, 2017 (edited) Thanks Richard. The bull and the barracudas around 20m, the lemon about 15. The reefs anywhere between 10 and 15. I was particularly interested to see how much more leverage the 10bit gives for grading. And, yes it does make some difference but not that huge. I actually prefer the added flexibility of 4K 60p and the 8bit footage still holds up pretty well during grading. It would of course be great to have both 60p and 10bit. Maybe it arrives one day Edited September 16, 2017 by bubffm
thetrickster 328 Posted September 16, 2017 I'm really impressed that most of the shots was with AutoWB and they corrected all okay! Makes using MWB a bit of a non issue - one less thing to fiddle with. And oh boy are you shark shots tack sharp! (How were you running the camera? Do you know the aperture?) super impressed!! The biggest thing I found wasn't 10Bit or 8bit or even the 60/30. But the compression. Using the atomos recorders with 880Mbps, when you start pulling the channels around the macro blocking (or rather the lack of compared to the GH4 100Mbps) really makes a difference, so I could see the benefit with the 400Mpbs options Internally on the GH5 without the need for 4kg+ of a atomos housing. Look forward to see your finished video of your trip - not sure I want to get that close to Bulls sharks! Regards - Richard
bubffm 178 Posted September 16, 2017 Yes Auto WB works really well on the GH5 at depth. You more or less have to use that anyway if you are shooting with lights. I got some funny results when trying to manually WB with lights. That really only works if you can point the cam to something whitish on the wall/reef. I should maybe un-dust my Keldan blue filters and retry with them the next time. On ambient shots, the manual WB can get you closer than AWB, but then again, the difference is not huge and you can fix it in post if you're somewhat off. I must admit, I did not try tuning in the Kelvin numbers as an alternative route, just forgot... The aperture was between 5.6 and 8. I moved it up and down a step as required, but its been in that region. ISO was on 400 most of the time, going up in 1/3 steps as required. The Panasonic 7-14 is not the fastest lens, but I think the results are ok, the "plastic" 6' Nauti-Dome was doing ok, but next time I think I'll use glass. My impression is the GH5 codec holds up pretty well. I was worried that it might not be as good as the Sony, which is known to be very robust. The 400 Mbps should be even better, particularly in fast moving action. The one thing I really did not like at all is the AF performance. Particularly with murky water and lots of particles floating around (which have been the standard conditions during this trip), its utterly useless. I deleted tons of clips for OoF. I hope the best for firmware 2.0.... I did take off my DNS Monitor after a couple of dives, because the drag was too big in those currents and manual focus on that tiny camera monitor at the lower end of the housing is a real pain. On the bulls: We were behind a stone wall. Still, if that guy would have nicked his head he would have catched more than just my cam Not so much into this shark circus thing, but from time to time its fun. Best, Burkhard

thetrickster 328 Posted November 23, 2017 Can you manually WB with the recorder? Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk The White balance is baked in to the ProRes files, so its not like RAW files from a Red or BM camera, so I'm not sure if I'm answering your question below.. The GH4 has an issue where if you have a recorder connected and have it in 10bit mode, the ability to manually white balance is removed - so you have to stick with either preset ones (which you could set when in 8bit mode) or using the kelvin ratings or standard 'cloudy' 'tungsten' etc.. Luckly the GH5 - you can now manually white balance while you it connected and in 10bit mode.
